I've just checked my eBay account :

The person to whom I sent €350 last week (for a Nokia 8800 cellphone) has unsubscribed.

Sudenly, I am terrified.

I've just emailed the seller.
I hope I'll get a reply.
I hope the goods are on their way.
(the description said it would take 15 days)

Questions :

- What can cause an active user to suddenly not be registered anymore?
Can it be deliberate? Is it a move from eBay suspecting something fishy?

- What can I do if I actually sent my check, but did not receive the item?
Can I ask my bank to give me my money back?
Can eBay do something?
Is there a point in going to the police?

- Since I actually mailed the money, the address I sent is to is probably the right one, isn't it?

If the check was not cashed yet you can cancel it. US banks typically charge $20 or so to cancel a check.

gotta ask them, I am sure the situation is not unusual or unique.

Not sure about the police where you are but offhand if it is anything like the US I'd say it is unlikely. They will likely tell you it is a civil matter since essentially it has to do with a broken contract. Fraud requires intent on the part of the criminal which would have to be proven.

I'll find out about that this evening.

But the thing is :
I don't know yet if the seller is actually sending anything or not.

On eBay's side :
I've found some forums stating that eBay sometimes pays an insignificant compensation.

And also : there's no way of knowing if the user unsubscribed on its own volition, or if Ebay kicked him out.
They won't give away that kind of 'confidential' information.

I'm afraid I have been fux0red.

I called the bank :
The check hasn't been cashed in yet.
And I can cancel it, even once it's cashed.

So I'll give it a few days and see what happens.

Good bank, still it sounds like a pain in the ass.

Has unsubscribed or was unubscribed? Not good sounding. Usual reason is that there's a serious dispute over item/money with someone.

When I bought a Gameboy for my son on Ebay, shortly after receiving it the seller had a status of "no longer registered user". About a week later they were back again. No problems with my transaction.

So perhaps ArkanGL will be lucky.

(Speaking of bargains, someone is trying to sell an equivalent amount of the Arabia Ruska at over 3 times of what I paid for mine - doubt they will get a buyer though)

The Salvation Army store had a deal - buy four paperbacks, pay for three. It felt kind of embarrassing since they're a bargain to being with, little more than €1 each. Got over it and bought:

Alfred Bester: The Demolished Man
Julian Barnes: Cross Channel
China Mieville: The Iron Council
J.D. Salinger: Raise High the Roofbeam Carpenters

I ended up getting a Nokia 3250 from eBay.

It's big.
It's slow.
It's filled with gadgets I don't have any use for.

But... the shape and the texture remind me of an old Dale Cooper-style voice recorder.

It's definitely growing on me.

Now if only I could get rid of this ugly UI theme and shortcuts...
and have my wallpaper fit the whole screen instead.

If you have two you can set them up to battle each other for the best dust spots.

Two Roomba enter, one roomba leaves.

I am assuming Roomba is the plural and the singular for some reason.

Picked up three first editions at the Salvation Army this week: Capote, L.A. Confidential, and Hacker Crackdown. Paid about ten bucks. Walked away from two Stephen Kings, also firsts.

It was really hardcore on Friday when I realized that I couldn't afford the time or money to buy a Grisham book I wanted. I had my eye on the Pelican Brief, but it eluded me yet again...

Bargains galore today! (exchange rate below)

Had to take my son shopping to buy new sandals as his last pair had a design flaw which caused the heel strap to keep falling off, now matter how securely it was sewn. Got my money back on those, but was left to try to find end-of-season sandals in his size and that he liked. Ordered some Ecco sandals online which arrived today, but were unfortunately too wide. Luckily I could return them in Copenhagen, so I didn't have to find postage.

Found a pair of sandals that fit him for 200 DKK! Yay!

Found high wedged sandals for myself for 175 DKK

Found a new world atlas for my son for 65 DKK

Bought a Magic Bullet knockoff (the TV Shop blender, not a vibrator) for 179 DKK

and a liter of pink guava juice for 15 DKK

Current exchange rate is $1 USD = 6 DKK but if you were to compare prices to American prices you should use $1 USD = 10 DKK as our salaries are higher
