Many of us come to this "place" because of the level of understanding and expertise that different members lend to their own fields and thus to us here as part of "The William Gibson Community."

I was thinking that perhaps we could all benefit from a centralized "ask the expert" thread.

For example, this might be a good place to ask Marshdrifter a question pertaining to archeology.

Or Colin about Japan, Japanese, or Japanese culture.

Or Mean Old Man about firearms.

Shall we begin then? Very well, let's give it a go.

Oh wait, I get it. For a moment there I thought you were proposing a sticky or archive thread for a list of ppls skills or knowledge area or whatever, for if board members could ever do with a hand, pointer, advice, whatever.

Hmm. Okay, mean old man, firearms... ...whatever happened to that australian guy with the em-field used to project projectiles. Did he really exist? And was that million a minute round-count real?
Do you have a favourite firearm? What makes it your favourite? Big Grin

>>archeology
Uh... I'm reading a laura croft novel (shh!) right now so... ...what are the exciting parts of archeology to you? What kinds of places might an adventureous archeologist go to, whether out in the field, or in the library, whatever? Smile

EDIT: Naturally, of course, one absolutely does not have to answer my questions! :lol

I have no idea if that is a real domain or not. It's just an example.

Make a [url] tag around the [img] tag. Or do html:

<a href="http://www.hairclub.com"><img src="http://209.17.131.1/contest/images/341b.jpg"></a>

In html you can also supply width and height and align attributes to the img tag, which can be useful. Once you type it in once, the WGB will interpret it mostly into UBB code, so if you edit the message sometimes you screw it up. But with standard image links it shouldn't be a problem.

thx colin.
It's odd because I've done exactly what you just did to embed a link but without the spaces...I don't know why it didn't work.
I will try a test one now.

One can also embed a picture in a clickable picture, as I've done in my autosig below.

Here's how:

My question is - What is the black substance appearing on our wood cutting boards? Is it a mold/mildew? How do I get rid of it?

Bleach is fine, as Pauline says, but shouldnt be necessary.
Step 1: After each use: clean thouroughly with hot water and soap.
Step 2: each time you have washed them, let them dry completely in free air before you put them away. Don't stack them while drying.

Bleach is good, but if your of the more tie-dyed, dope-smoking, tree-embracing persuasion, try white vinegar. There's a reason white it's sold in four litre (gallon) tubs in the cleaning aisle.

Mix a bunch of it with a bunch of steaming water, and soak the board in it. Then leave it in the sun to dry. UV rays kill everything. Or at least give everything a tan.

All else fails [kiwi]Whut Kuhng uht[/kiwi]. Reach for Bleach!

Splitcoil, any cheap ways to get a Fender Vintage (ie, baaaad) trem to stay somewhat in tune when using it?

Not entirely true. UV kills active, growing bac and fungi, but if any of them sporulate, they'll just come back.

Hot and soapy water should be good enough for food purposes, though weak bleach solution's what is used in restaurants to comply with public health regulations.

I suppose, with the ozone hole and all that, that things may be different down under, but the hard UV used for disinfectant purposes is absorbed by that mentioned ozone layer, so just sunning the boards will not be enough. Or the black stains will reappear everytime that conditions are dark and humid again.

For food purposes the recommended sodium hypochlorite solution (bleach) here is 1%. As most commercial bleach is 10-15% it should be dilluted in water.

Being lazy, I just used to put the wooden cutting board in the washing machine. Hot steam works wonders, but eventually cracks and warps the wood, which is why now we have polypropylene cutting boards. No mildew in polypropylene!

Anyone know whether glass cutting boards (a) work well, (b) are as hygienic as they seem and (c) don't blunt the hell out of your knives?

And the hell with it, just get a good neutron flux source going in your house and put the board in there - that'll kill everything, plus you won't have to turn on the lights when preparing dinner.

(This is the approach of my beloved, nicknamed 'Toxic Suzie' because she always believes more power is better. We will have to replace the vinyl flooring in the kitchen of this place when we leave, because she decided oven cleaner was just the ticket for taking a stain off it...)
