i'm leaving for iceland this sunday, which means that half my weekend consists of packing. this is no small task considering that the weather there looks variable between london-esque gloom and frigidity.

so, here i was, wondering what the hell people wore there. you know, out of curiousity. i've heard that lopapeysa are making a comeback, but i was planning on buying one anyway.

this curiousity spilled over to the rest of the world. i don't much care about fashion, but i *do* trendwatch. inquiring minds want to know: what are the trends on the streets of your town?

i'll share one undying trend from london and other parts of the world: ugg boots. these things fascinate me. i don't own any, and i won't, but i find them so fascinating. how did something so ugly get to be so fashionable?

girls around here are also sporting little tailored jackets and eensy weensy frayed miniskirts made out of old 501s along with their uggs. i broke tonight and bought said miniskirt. it's incredibly short but i plan on wearing it with some nice thick leggings/tights to stay decent. i feel so trendy!

sometimes i wonder if trends are global now in that there aren't any locale-specific trends (another reason i start this thread). and sometimes i think that maybe they start in tokyo and then propagate slowly around the world in one direction or another.

i'm so fashion-impaired. fashionpolice, help me!

You think YOU'RE fashion-impaired? Smile Here's the outfit de jour:

1) Fraying Levi's silvertab baggy jeans. (Old-style, not the new huge leg-hole style)

2) A Sandman (viz. Neil Gaiman comic book of ages past) t-shirt, black with the three siblings on the front (viz. Dream, Death and Delirium)... this shirt is no less than 11 years old. I bought it in high school.

3) A true-to-form 90's grunge flannel that is, yes, as old as the shirt above. It's *sort of* red... but its so faded that it's hard to tell. Half of the buttons are missing... Smile But it is so damn comfortable!

4) Birkenstocks (no heel strap, fuck all that)

5) Guinness baseball cap, which alternates between forward-facing and backward facing.

6) Some 15$ sunglasses that I got somewhere.

That's it. I look like a cross between the Eddie Vedder of old and some burnt out hippie-type. Though, to be fair, I was only really wanting to put on the old clothes today. Good to know they still fit me and are still comfy. However, I do feel like, when I am wearing these types of clothes, that I am wholly in my element. Perfect match for my personality!

good to hear you're staying away from the uggs. fucking atrocity, those. women everywhere put an instant kaibosh on their eligibility. damn shame.

Brooches are (or perhaps were) the big accessory trend here in Copenhagen. Made out of all kinds of materials. Used to be something only old grannies wore, but apparently no more.

Have fun in Iceland - it's the second most beautiful place I've ever been.

Blue Levis, not quite as faded as they should be yet.
Tanga underwear (dark blue with black elastic), bought in South Africa 'cos I can't find decent tangas here.
Maroon longsleeve t-shirt, pushed up just below the elbows.
Zip-sided (for convenience), laces-fronted (for the look of the thing) Harley-Davidson boots. (as seen here)
Thick B.U.M. socks (lame dad joke when we bought them - "but I need socks for my *feet*")

This is my daily teaching uniform, with tiny variations (colour of shirt, jeans).

Blue Levis don't look right until they have faded to match the countours of your body to some extent. No pre-fading acid-wash nonsense will do - a decent pair of faded jeans has to be *earned*. And then the crotch blows out...

Mood Indigo

You ain't been blue, No, No, No,
You ain't been blue,
Till you've had that Mood Indigo,
That feeling goes stealin down to my shoes,
While I sit and sigh
Go long, blues.

I like Levis when they are very blue and very long. Go long, blues!

And hang them to dry where the sun don't shine.

you two shameless hussies need to settle right down over there! don't make me pull this thing over!

DP: so...where's THE most beautiful place you've been, then?

for the record, i agree about the faded levis. this tragically short levis miniskirt contraption came pre-faded, as in the jeans were pre-owned.

right, now, only rs has answered with a real actual trend. (thank you, rs!) the rest of you must live in a hole, like me. how am i supposed to be glamourous without cosmopolitan pointers?

another london trend: wearing tight jeans tucked into kneehigh highheeled boots. very 70s. another look i'm not keen on rocking any time soon.

ok, i'll play.

black belt with

Vestal Purgatory

this in brushed steel.

this is what i wear nearly every day. sometimes the shirt will vary. as i throw them oot, i'm replacing them with white only. in winter i wear a sweater of some kind or hoodie. jeans brand may vary.

sometimes this:

summertime yields shorts, tan, and my Rod Lavers, a style i have yet to see anywhere else. they're a hybrid of the mesh/leather, without the annoying tan on the toe (it's white) and all leather save for the mesh on the sides. furthermore, the mesh is plastic, not fabric. should've bought three pairs. ah well. i also have other shoes i wear on various occasions, but my shoe collection has dwindled quite a bit over the years. it's gone from 9 pairs to 5.

i think there's a pattern emerging here.

Oh, I'm boringerest. Jeans shirt boots. I can't wear jewelery, watches, etc because they annoy me. I only wear my wedding band out of the house. In the summer I switch to my vans, though I've annihilated my last pair, so come spring I may have to pick up some new ones. I have a hoodie I wear around the house.

But my wife, well, she just discovered Lucky Brand Jeans. To quote her: "holy fuck, they fit."

He got tired of his old sig, and changed it.

(OT answer) Copeland River valley, South Island of New Zealand.

Back OT (kind of), even though it's cheesy-touristy, you should definitely go to the Blue Lagoon. And do the dog sled over the glacier bit.
