I have seen this movie many, many times and am still unsure what the ending is supposed to mean. I get the vague intimation that Tetsuo has the power to make worlds and maybe is beginning to make one and that Akira has formed, or could have formed, a universe and that the energy he taps into is that of a kind of prime mover.

As far as I can recall (it's been a few years since I've watched it all the way through), both Tetsuo and Akira have the capacity to create worlds. Because Tetsuo was a test subject when he was older (compared to the young old ones), he cannot control it: instead of being able to create a universe, his body grows and begins to absorb his surroundings. Akira, on the other hand, already knows how to either create universes or how to meld his energy with the universe's, so he appears at the end to take Tetsuo and the other test subjects out of this universe.
Anyway, that's my take. I am unsure if this is explained better in the much longer manga. »» "Forget infinity. I've got books waiting for me to read them." — colin »»"Speculative novels of last Tuesday." — William Gibson |

In the manga, almost none of this occurs or is mentioned much.
I think you're right about Akira coming to take him out of this universe though, yeah. That helps codify it for me, thanks. --- "Your enthusiasm for sporting events reveals nothing about the human condition except by way of irony." |

Was gonna Photoshop Dame Edna Everage's glasses and gladies onto a picture of Akira - but I have a headache, so just imagine it, OK? ________________________ differently mediated |

It's photoshopping, not sex with a partner you no longer find attractive.

Now I'm looking forward to the "Akira" real-time movie coming out in 2009/2010.

The universe as destroyed/created/recreated/absorbed in a secret underground laboratory: that's a whole new level of excess. Makes one long for the days of simple evil genii in their castle turret laboratories. I once, I confess, thought of writing a novel with a similar premise: mutant demiurgic mage created by scientific experiment. I think I might now be able to make a modest miniature of such a thing. |

Something funny about anime rendered in human-acted cinema. The blurred edge where photography meets animation via CGI, for example.
Seems to me a more poetic emulation would be to redo it via PIXAR. |
