Thelonious
Miles
David (or Dave)
Cole

Susan
Jennifer
Sarah
Claire

I started trying to think of jazz names, but for the girls I just ended up with names that make me think "pretty."

Marie
Laura
Linda
Lydia

OK, I admit it. I like most girl's names.

Ooh, jazz names...Maceo, Charlie

Women:

Nina
Ella
Sarah
Billie (her given name was Eleanora)

Is it bad karma to name a babe after someone who met a tragic end though?

You could also adopt the naming convention of foreign countries. One of the reasons so many Spanish people had so many names was because traditionally you would get five or so. One from one of the grandparents (including transgender versions), one chosen among the saints of the birthday, one chosen by the priest doing the baptism (skipped often), one chosen by the godparents and finally one chosen by the parents.

Made it easier, in a way. So if he/she is born the 20th of October, you get to pick among Aca, Agrícola, Artemio, Basilio, Somancio, Vidal, Feliciano, Fintán, Irene, Edano, Eutiquio, Caprasio, Bradan, Orora, Daniel, Honorio, Matrona, Adelina.

Actually Xavier is how those unable to properly pronounce a [j] translate the name. ja'bier. Spanish has so few simple vowels...

i had an english teacher who had taught fraternal twin students named king arthur and lady guinivere.

same teacher had a student named 'female' the mom thought the hospital had named the baby since that is what it said on the little pink bracelet the baby was wearing.

mom named me after the most popular boys name from the year before my birth. thanks mom. I once shared a class with four other kids with my name. the teacher thought it was cute to sit us all together.

Be careful with some names and remember that although this is your beautiful child naming a little girl something like Teagan or Shyla is just setting her up for porn stardom.

Yeah, nice, Josef - actually, 'Harlan' has a nice ring to it too.

Krads - avoid giving the child ann oddly spelled name that they will have to spell out every time they give it to someone filling in a form or whatever. Odd spellings of names with well known standard spellings are particularly bad - I have a friend who is Shaaron.

Oh, and from a couple of pages back:

What about Zachariah Zebulon, to become Zed or ZZ? Zach and Zeb are both quite nice on their own, in my opinion.

ZeeZee Krad, just lookin' for some tush Wink

...and avoid names that are also liquor*, luxury goods, or combinations of your first pet and the street you grew up on.

* I suppose Lagavulin is safe though

i'd advise against Ailsa by the way, it's my sisters' and it will always be mangled and substituted by others.

For the leafy and hippyish possibilities,
Ran into my daughter's former English teacher, yesterday and remembered her daughter's name is "Ivy."
I've also worked with a young woman named "Autumn."
My niece is named "Laurel."

I like Jessica [my daughter's name and I know is a dreaded "J" name], and Michaela. Gotta think about a male name.

Timothy?

Sorry to slightly disagree with you, Anabel, but for me 'Michaela' (unless it's spelled and pronounced something like 'Mikayla', seems like on of those 'we really planned for a boy' girls names.

Actually, your spelling is what I originally thought it was when I first heard it years ago. But I was corrected.

Zaphod, but only if it has the appropriate number of heads.

"It may be said with rough accuracy that there are three stages in the life of a strong people. First, it is a small power, and fights small powers. Then it is a great power, and fights great powers. Then it is a great power, and fights small powers, but pretends that they are great powers, in order to rekindle the ashes of its ancient emotion and vanity. After that, the next step is to become a small power itself."
