How about "William" if it's a boy, in honour of our patron? I think it's cool, but it's also my middle name so I'm somewhat biased.

What not to call your baby. A friend of mine is a social worker, and she has encountered several children with extraordinary names, including a girl called Ikea - no, it's not an urban legend.

best,
Chris H

Nah, but it can get inconvenient when you're calling him downtown.

Carpet Burns.. (I shoudl have made it clearer which name I was referring to!)

And yeah, I think its a non-brit thing, the naming kids things like Clan.. Alot of Americans I know name their kids complicated Irish names because they're Irish.. yet they're about 6 generations away from Irish.. Krad explained it to me in as much as new countries (such as US and Australia) not having the huge history we do, so having to focus on their own family history alot more than we do over here.

*laughs*

Robert McNamara's middle name is "Strange", which I always thought was kind of cool. My great-grandfather - a stout Victorian draper - had "Primrose" as his middle name. I don't recommend it.

I think it also depends if you are staying in London, as it is almost impossible to stick out with an unusual name, as there are so many people from all over the world here. (eg, I knew a kid called "We Will Be A Nation" in Zulu.)

For my kidlet's first name, I went with one of the commonest names in the world. I named him for a relative I had adored, but I also liked that nobody could make any assumptions about him - age, race, class - from his name alone.

Your kidlets name is a very good choice.. But, its begins with the banned letter Wink Actually, damn.. I really like the kidlets name *lol* Then with a slightly wild middle name (though yeah, probably not primrose *lol*)

Its times like I this I wish I did have a more interesting cultural heritage.. You would be hard pressed to find someone with a more British heritage than me..
We'll be moving to Chardonnay kinda country *lol*

We have found Kew gardens a very good place for finding names we don't want.. as we listen to their very middle class, west London mothers calling them.. *LOL*

I think if I'd thought of Danger-is-my-middle-name, then I might well have gone with that - too irresistable!

Again in London, I know three men who are genuinely called Angel, Dax and Spike - and they are in their late thirties/early forties (therefore pre-Buffy and pre-STDS9), and their mothers named them, they didn't name themselves after their favourite geek character.

There's a kid in kidlet's class called Osama (bear in mind this kid was born sometime between October and December 2001...) It's funny how the first time you hear it, you think "wha? uh?", especially when you make the link with the kid's age, but now it's just the kid's name. Although I wouldn't recommend that, either.

(Edit: it's impossible to abbreviate Star Trek: Deep Space 9 without it looking like either a venereal disease or having an emoticon pop up in the middle of it!)

ah. i was so taken aback by the strange idea someone might have actually been given that name i never followd it through.

as for "clan", there are plenty of cultural names without resorting to being called words. but hey, no offense to clan, not their fault.
