Dear, I got my first degree in Alabama as well, and spent eight, okay, almost nine, years there. Enough for a lifetime. Of course there are some nice people there. There are nice people in the garbage dump settlements of Cairo and Rio, too. Doesn't mean a person should live there if they can avoid it, or that they should saddle a fellow human with the name.

Moreover: you're familiar with the South, you have connections in the South, we both know it's terribly easy to get into universities or get good work in the South, and it's cheap to live in the South, and yet... you're not there, now are you?

I still like Gibson even if it is a cocktail -- or because (there is Tom Collins too-- and Pina Colada for a little girl...) -- sooo how long to go now? You realize there will be plenty of weird gifts coming in the mail from the entire world...

I'll go back one day. I just have to figure out when (given I'm sort of in the middle of attempting to fulfill my destiny and all that trite crap). In the meantime, I visit as much as possible.

I used to hate the south when I was a kid. It took some outside perspective to come to terms with it. So I consider my outside time a blessing but also a curse because now I always feel the gravitational pull of my Home home pulling me back. All I ever did was want to leave...until I left.
