Read the following article today With U.S. in slump, dual citizenship in EU countries attracts Americans

quote:
"With an EU passport, I can live and work in 27 countries," said Suzanne Mulvehill of Lake Worth. "With a U.S. passport, I can live and work in one."

Americans can claim citizenship in any of the 27 European countries that are in the EU based on the nationality of their parents, or in some cases, grandparents and great-grandparents. Citizenship in one of those countries allows you to live and work in any EU nation.

quote:
"I'm doing it as an exit strategy of sorts," Alfano said. "I like knowing that I have another place to go if things get even worse here, or if I just get tired of running on the American mouse wheel.

Reminds me of this commercial that was running up and down all channels here.

As my fiance is 2nd gen French, and I am of Irish descent, we're looking into it. It is not cheap, not even affordable really. Which is the suck. Dual citizenship would be nice. One of my best friends was born in Austria and raised here. I envy his red passport.

Obviously they haven't heard that when America sneezes Europe catches a cold. Not to mention that the EU is already full of EUians, and according to half the US press, Muslimists, and even worse, cheese eating surrender monkeys.

Random irrelevancy - it's kind of hilarious to me that Americans use 'cheese-eating' as an epithet, given their own common cuisine...

Ah, Bravus, but many Americans never eat cheese at all: they eat "Processed Cheese Food," which is something else entirely Wink

ETA: and my compatriots, too...

Personally, I'm going down with the ship. You'll find me at the bottom, clutching my oar, swearing that all we need is a little pitch and some canvas.

As a dual 'meriken/Dutchie citizen I can say there are certain advantages. Tax free for "tourists" (with round trip tickets). EU line in Schipol, USAian line in JFK. I've traveled on my EU passport in certain countries were it would disadvantageous to be from the States.

But remember this well: the US is the only major nation to tax it's citizens earnings abroad over a certain threshold *regardless* of what taxes you pay living abroad.

Not entirely true, it depends on whether there is a tax treaty with that country and what it says in it. It's highly unlikely that I'll ever have to pay US taxes while I'm living in Denmark, even if I earned more than the standard foreign income deduction.

But then there's this beauty just passed by Congress and awaiting GWB's signature:
http://www.withersworldwide.com/news-publications/324/e...s-to-become-law.aspx

Relinquish your US citizenship and be taxed on all unrealized gains.

Wow. Downright interesting way of going about this. Hardly targeted at the globally mobile worker, though.

It would be very difficult to live in more than one country but I don't think that is what she meant.

isn't that what cheese eats?

I have currently 4 registered addresses in 3 different countries.

And am flying between them on a regular basis.
I can only be in one country at a time, true. But as all my worldly belongings are distributed between them, I do consider living in all of them.
