To me it's starting to look like the whole island project was set up by Des's girlfriend's (Pen's?) father just to stop Des getting back from his round the world race. It seems she knows about the electro-magnetism situation so has set-up some observers in the [Ant]Arctic to triangulate the EM events so she can find him again. At one point in the flashbacks she said she could find him because she had enough money.

My brother-in-law had an imaginary friend as a child, at about the age of 6, to the extent that he insisted a place be set for him at the table. His imaginary friend was called Jim Clark.
