What words, or new meanings of words, has Mr Gibson given us?

There is of course cyberspace, and I read somewhere in the last week that "The Matrix" might be attributed to Gibson also.

Aside from those, has the word Wilson (as in Bobby pulls a wilson) made it into common language? I like to think it has.

While looking for a description of The Finn for another post, I came across a new use of the word based on Gibson:
Finn/v./ [IRC] To pull rank on somebody based on the amount of time one has spent on IRC. The term derives from the fact that IRC was originally written in Finland in 1987. There may be some influence from the `Finn' character in William Gibson's seminal cyberpunk novel "Count Zero", who at one point says to another (much younger) character "I have a pair of shoes older than you are, so shut up!"

I recall a great deal of discussion over the word/phrase "jackmove" from... aww shit, it's too early for my brain to be retrieving location of unique Gibson chatterbits. Someone else probably can recall it instantly...

It was in the thread about foreign translations of his works. How do you translate made up words was the the general thrust of it.

He got tired of his old sig, and changed it.

Oh, boy. Here I come to ruin the fun, sort of.

I learned the term "wilson" when I was a little skate rat. The word refers to landing a trick with one foot on and one foot off the board, resulting in the board shooting out from under the rider, who then performs an unintentional and extreme split. I sprained my right ankle half a dozen times doing this. Etymologically, I always heard that it came from Mr. Wilson, from the [American] Dennis The Menace comics; he originated the move while trying out Dennis's skateboard.

WG's done wonderous things using nouns as verbs... e.g. Zaprudered

FWIW: A-Z with WG

my current professor's name is wilson. he is always telling us stories of doing stupid things as a student related to whatever topic we're covering that usually culminate in him saying to himself "wilson, you idiot..."

Yes, I remembered that much. i was trying to remember which book "jackmove" is in, and griping because i couldn't recall it and to access all my gibson books would have required moving a lot of stuff around, a task for which it was far too early in the morning caffeination ritual to attempt... Wink

It's in All Tomorrow's Parties - I know because I was the one who talked about helping the Czeck translator...

I think the OED would probably credit ATP for first instance, but "jack move" was explained in greater detail in PR, having been a favorite phrase of a previous Donnie.

I love that they were all named Donnie.

A jack move predates ATP though. NWA sang about it in 1988.

yeah, jackmove has some previous history somewhere. My dad used the term once to me a few years ago, before PR or ATP had hit, and I know he's not cool enough to be digging NWA in the 80's.

Funny thing, he used the jackmove in a strategy and tactics way. A good way of fucking with your oponent.

I don't recall reading the phrase "jack move" in ATP, anyone happen to have a reference?

Either way, I do like the phrase, but not enough to actually have used it in conversation.

Nodal point is a different story though. And that particular word I have heard used in other media outlets/places than just Gibson.

I believe it's when Rydell is being tailed on the bridge and randomly cuts through a wall to escape, referring to the move as a jackmove.
