This is what I use to hold my deck together. Helps me stay jacked in when trying to map the shape of the matrix . . . . DO NOT settle for imitations !!!
...those little twist-up wires, or velcro strips, or, my favorite, clumping together as many cables as possible with discarded toilet paper tubes. When you have more than one machine, a scanner, burners, monitors, external modem, video in/out converters, etc., all with their connection and power cables, those tubes can sort the vine jungle nicely... and thick bundles of many tubes look >cool<...

First thing you gotta do is remove all those #&@!* adverlabels made of shiny papermetal logos. One for the proc, one for the vid, the sound...Then you can proceed to sanding down the manufacturer labels--or, for the less hardcore, wallpapering over them with your own anime/metal band/ironic pomo quote stickers.
Then the l33tness can begin.
Believe it or not, I did this *before* reading PR. If I can't have my Sandbenders, I at least insist on not being relentlessly subjected to advertisement for the (rather expensive) product I've already bought.

The reason why they would want to use gaffer's tape instead of duct tape is that when gaffer's tape is removed it "shouldn't" leave any residue on the surface. That and if they do work in the media/ audio/ visual industry it may be that they are more used to gaffer’s tape. Other possibility could be an elitist thing.
