It's what happens when people turn their art over to their ideology. I'm sure there's liberal examples galore. In fact, most liberal protest songs have always been turds. The ones that aren't, you can't understand what they're singing.

These folks dig them some William Gibson (as per a boing boing interview). I don't like a lot of rap but I like Die Antwoord. Not yer standard shit, not that you'd expect the same shit from rappers who claim influence from Neuromancer.

Die Antwoord -- Zef Side

Die Antwoord -- Enter The Ninja

Heh. They're performance artists. It's entirely an act. It's still fun. But it's an act.

I don't get your point, Split. What's an act?

Wow. I like her brain. Interesting sense of rhythm. Picking through some other videos, I note she plays like she has Tourette's. Even when she's playing a good guitar, she makes it sound like shit. Which smacks of shtick, but it's still interesting. No good reason but shtick to sound that way unless you're playing a Stella into 1930s recording gear that came out of the trunk of some college boy from up north...

I mean, an act beyond say, my act? Acting like I know how to produce gas wells and that it's worth $22,000 a month.

I love that act!

The whole white trash Afrikaans persona is a deliberate act. The music of course would be an act no matter where they came from. But the personae are an act as well.

Gibson was big on them when he found them, and it's from him I understand it's a performance art act. I read a few comments to that effect in a couple of blogs myself.

[It's still cool as hell. Not saying it's not cool.]

Something about her voice. Kinda addicting.

I know. And the whole slightly off-kilter timing. You'd think it might be annoying, but it's not. Gotta be a very narrow set of people who could both conceive of and execute that kind of thing that well. Portland girl, though. Weird town, Portland.

I think Die Antwoord struggled for quite awhile. They just hit it big lately. Now is he really a Ninja?

No. I think that part's an act. Be surprised if it wasn't.

Cute girl, in a nasty sort of way.

Apparently he's one of the oldest living survivors of progeria as well.

Yeah. As diseases go, progeria is wicked bad. On them being an act, I'll agree that wasn't their neighborhood in that first video. And that the Ninja guy knows more than to call it... what... a PC computer? That was sort of plastic.

I really like the second video, though. The Ninja one. They're really good and/or they got some really good writers.

By the way, Split. You get a chance to try out your new song with the band? Don't let that one fade away, man. Seriously.
