2012 must be an interesting year if you are working in higher education and happen to live in the south of the U.S., also known as the bible belt. May 2012: North Carolina, of all places, has found what can only be described as an elegant solution for rising sea levels caused by global warming. They outlawed them. Well, they didn't forbid the seas from rising per se, they are not that stupid (yet), but they effectively outlawed to use any meaningful scientific method to record or predict the levels. Scientific America reported about it:
Source: http://blogs.scientificamerica...-level-rise-illegal/ June 2012: Revolutionary ideas travel fast. And not even a month has passed until Virginia adapted the solution to get rid of the global warming problem all together. They took a bit less scientific approach though, and just outlawed the usage of certain terms, because:
Source: http://thinkprogress.org/clima...on-coastal-flooding/ I guess the above is going to help, but it in itself will probably not be sufficient to disperses Rex Tillerson's (CEO, ExxonMobil) fears over the demise of education and science:
Source: http://thetyee.ca/Blogs/TheHoo...-fuel-adapt-climate/ But it is the end of June, and July can only bring improvement at this stage. July 2012: (today) After all the problems with global warming are once and for all solved, we can finally concentrate on more important matters. If, dear reader, you still have brain cells left at this stage, buckle your seatbelt, because Kansas is going bye-bye.
Erm, … why does that make any sense I hear those brain cells screaming in agony?
And just in case you wondered what 'that' has to do with Nessie:
Okay, so why did only Nessie survive?
...and in case you are still a 'sceptic', it goes on like this, but read for yourself: Source: http://www.heraldscotland.com/...e-evolution.17918511 Source: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/si...unded-190816504.html ___________________________________________________________ "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." Failing to educate people that then grow up and get to make laws or sit on school boards is a circular problem.

Only for certain demographics. If you're of a specific pigmentation, age and mindset, it's a means of consolidating and maintaining power. It's is also why we have "ghettos". "...but I like a placebo,"

However, it IS a healthy reaction to the reality these asshats force upon us. And, for the record, realism is NOT paranoia. The American education system has traditionally been a means of segregating the people. Just because the courts acknowledged this a few years ago does not mean anything has changed. It only means they figured out how to not get caught. All that took was getting the general public dumbed-down enough to wallow in their own ignorance. We reached that place in the late 70's. People now are so fucking stupid they're afraid of actual intelligence and facts. "...but I like a placebo,"

It's difficult to be objective about one's own convictions but when they become extreme it's a signal to take a closer look and broaden one's view by investigating all possible sides of an issue --- look at all elements and variables that make a phenomenon what it is. --- We are such stuff As dreams are made on; and our little life Is rounded with a sleep.

This isn't a thread about correcting children with your belt, is it? ------------------- My new favorite Mythbuster quote: "As with all flights off the ground, taking off is optional -- landing is mandatory."

Paranoia stopped being extreme when they assassinated JFK. The dumber a people are, the more pliable they become. This is intentional. There's no profit in an educated public. This is why we're so good at killing. This is why our biggest growth industry is the prison system. This is legalized slavery. "...but I like a placebo,"

Article in the Huffington Post (with video):
In short, this is what I make out of this. In Kentucky evolution is only thought in high school to be a wanko theory some nutters believe in. After mentioning this for 10 or so minutes, (dis)education moves on. But unfortunately, they eventually were confronted with the fact that in the entry level exams for state collages, knowledge about evolution is actually being questions. So rather than changing their high-school colloquium, they now try to lobby to get the uniformed college entry exams changed for the whole country. ___________________________________________________________ "The best way to predict the future is to invent it."
