Since grunge imploded (94)I had stopped listening to new/mainsream rock but lately I have been paying attention to newer rock bands,
So far I like:
-The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
-TV on the Radio
-Placebo
-Mars Volta
Any suggestions of bands worth listening to would be most welcome.

PS I despise Franz Ferdinand

Hoboken.

Top electro-lounge with a (dark) twist.

Imagine Frank Sinatra brought up in the Gorbals with a synth.

Nice.

If you liked Mars Volta you should check out their precursor band, At the Drive In. I've been digging the new Modest Mouse album as well. For hiphop who names as influences bands like My Bloody Valentine and Led Zeppelin, check out Dalek (spelled with an umlaut A, but I can't be bothered to go hunting Unicode tables at the moment). Sadly, most new music just seems to be rehashed popstream stuff. Luckily we have decades of prerecorded material to sort through until some more good new stuff shows up. I still enjoy Franz Ferdinand though, precisely because they are a bunch of wankers who don't give a shit.

I'm enjoying You're a Woman, I'm a Machine by Death From Above 1979. they're a two man band who manage some pretty intense rock.

Metric is another good band that comes to mind.

If you like slightly depressing romantic pop orchestrals, check out the Dears. While they are not new, hardly anyone knows them despite being mentioned in magazines as one of those 'up and coming' bands for years.

I'm liking the Modest Mouse album too.

Excellent suggestions, nearly every one.

Muse: is awesome.
Trail of dead: is good.
Perfect circle: is uh...Toolish(I know) yet more melodic.
Rasputina: Ok you need to at least hear this stuff. Its crazy.
Coheed & Cambria: are pretty mediocre honestly, but that may just be because I saw them a bunch of times(they are from Nyack NY and I lived right near there) before they got "big". But give them a listen.

I have been to a Rasputina (a ladies cello society, along the lines of a 1800s quilting society) concert, and was blown away..They're probably the most unique quartet I've heard in the last 15 years. Truly magnificent. And they keep their drummer in a plexiglass box, so as not to infect the band with his boy germs.

I'll second this one. Their latest album is quite excellent, imho.

These have been mentioned, but I'll expand a little... not all the suggestions are 'rock'

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead
Albums/Eps etc: Madonna, Source Tags & Codes, Worlds Apart [it was leaked, (as far as i know) it's fairly good]

At The Drive-In: Relationship Of Command, the Vaya EP... there are others

Sparta: Wiretap Scars (great), Porcelain (not as good in my opinion), Austere EP.

Modest Mouse: not much to add.. The Good News... album is godly. Interstate 8 and Building Nothing out of Something aren't bad either.

Muse: Myes. I'm a little over them now, to be honest. Showbiz & Origin of Symmetry are both good. I realised a while back that their music now sounds a lot like 'rock hymns', if you know what i mean.

The Music: self titled album is good. Welcome to the North is utter shite.

Queens of the Stoneage: all their albums are good... Songs for the Deaf is one of the strongest albums I've ever heard. No filler whatsoever. You might also want to check out KYUSS.

You already mentioned YYY's and Mars Volta.

The Kills: Keep on your mean side

Kings of Leon: all good.

The Mint Chicks: newish band out of New Zealand.

Shihad: they have a number of albums, The General Electric is by far the best in my opinion.

Pretty Girls Make Graves: worth a listen

Love of Diagrams: melbourne band. their new album is indieish rock greatness

The Rapture & Hot Hot Heat

The Von Bondies

Something a bit more er.. left field.. The Liars

Firewater: Get off the Cross... We need the wood for the fire.

Pleasure Forever: self titled

The Books: it's all brilliant, but it ain't anything like rock

Shihad: Great band. Briefly known as Pacifier because - well, see if you can guess. My vote for their best album differs from H-K; I'd go with their third (?), the self-titled one.

Allegedly the band received this endorsement from Iggy Pop, who was in the audience for their set at a NZ festival: "Yeah, they rocked, and they were so polite between songs."

Dave Grohl was apparently impressed by Shihad as well. Of course, mileage varies on that endorsement.

Ned's Atomic Dustbin isn't new but it could be.
their sound is very fresh thanks to two bass players and only one guitar. some really cool jams.

for something a little heavier you might want to check out Chevelle. all three albums are solid, though Point #1 has a great minimal rampaging to it i quite like. deadly live act too.

another vote here for Hot Hot Heat. FYI, new album should be oot soon. actually, most of what's been suggested here gets a nod from me.

Sam Roberts' We Were Born in a Flame is an innovative delight with the second half of the record evoking a Beatles-y sort of vibe.

The White Stripes. everything they do is deadly.
factoid: not brother and sister. ex-husband and wife. and White is Meg's surname.

The Marble Index. toured with The Pixies for some Canadian dates. fucken vocalist can belt out a song. admittedly i haven't heard the entire album. i was sold from the lead-off single I Believe. review

Second the vote for the White Stripes: hold the 'next big thing' hype against the music journos, not the band!

I d/led one track by 'That 1 Guy' - and you can do likewise here . His album title 'Songs In The Key of Beotch' is great.

Wolf & Cub

I saw them play at a recent Love of Diagrams cd launch. Adelaide band that rock.. some rough edges, but the grooves they lay down are solid with a healthy dose of double percussion goodness. Aurally attractive to my ears.
