I'm curious how everyone feels about the feel of Gibson cyberpunk ideas (Sprawl trilogy) versus Neal Stephenson's contribution (Snow Crash, Diamond Age).
I would love to see what these two could do together to advance the idea of the future. They are quite different in style, but approach the same ideals. I like the grittier Gibson universe better, but I like the ideas that Stephenson puts forth. They are usually just a bit too idealized for me. We all live in the real world, and everyone knows that you could always lose a virtual sword fight. In the Gibson universe, the idea that you could possibly win is the outlandish one. In my eyes, Gibson made me persue the idea of making the future a better place, and Stephenson made me realize it could be possible to succeed. -- All around decent avatar. |

Given the works you mentioned, you really need to give Cryptonomicon a read. It's Stephensons' most Gibson-like work (in my opinion) and, like PR, is set in the quasi-present.

Books don't scale..
I'm digging through my mind trying to think of any joint writing project that really worked for me; I'm sure there are some but it seems quite rare...compared to say, music, where collaboration is central to the form... Looking close to home, TDE was for me just ok; neither BS or WG at their best... |
