My job moves me around a lot.

I'm about to start a gig in Hartford, Conn. in the USA. My geography of the northeast US is a little hazy. I had thought Hartford was outside of New York City and I could live in the City and commute. Hartford is actually in the middle of no place, far from any place.

If you are familiar with this place, can you please e-mail or post suggesting:

1. Ex-pat Pubs where tobacco consumption is not a crime.

2. Places to eat, not using portion control, or charging a "Yuppie Food Coupon" ($20US banknote, the only note dispensed by American ATMs ) for an entree.

3. Stores selling pre-owned merchandaise: books, music, and clothing.

Hartford is a wasteland.

And, I arrived just in time to witness their consumption of tobacco products in bars and restaurants prohibition.

You're not surprised that it's a wasteland, are you? My condolences, Jacque.

Just think, though. Hartford's never been known for... anything, really. Maybe it's moment is due. Maybe the Next Big Thing is about to break in Hartford. And you'll be there to witness it.

Or maybe you'll at least find a nice diner where a waitress with a beehive hairdo will call you "hon" and bring you french toast.

Except for being the navel of the US insurance industry, and the home base of The Colt Firearms Company. Checks and balances, y'all...

Funny, I talk to people in Hartford, and they say that: "Its going to be just like Providence, real soon now."

Then, I had to ask them where Providence was located.
