Friday night: Dälek and Meat Beat Manifesto. I went mainly for Dälek, so seeing MBM rock out was a bonus. Too bad that Still left the band, but pretty amazing to see two guys rock so fucking hard. Octopus and Dälek had a great interview in Tape Op magazine a couple years ago, and got me interested in alternative hiphop.
Impressions of gig: LOUD. VERY LOUD. Amazingly loud considering their setup. Dälek was on the mic and Oct had two Apple laptops feeding into a mixer and probably some sort of sampler (hard to see their setup detailed even though I was right in the front leaning on the stage...) It all fit on a table about 4 feet wide. Loud as all hell. Tracks from their latest album Abscence were fairly clear, although I thought the vocals could have done with a bit less muddiness. Then again that's how I feel about Absence overall, so probably their live fidelity is pretty amazing considering how closely it sounds to the recorded product. They didn't play nearly long enough; I wanted more... MBM was really cool. They had a shitload of gear set up; 3 or 4 laptops, a jungle of wires hiding the other side of the tables set up on the side of the stage. Opposite side had the electronic drum kit and they set up two projectors and screens in the middle. So basically the guys came out and stayed behind their setups but your eye was attracted to the crazy video shit center stage. I'm not really familiar with them but of course I recognized the obvious, like the track they have on the Matrix OST. Mostly it reminded me of going out to dance clubs in Virginia except the music was pretty much all good and the girls could grind better... I love Texas flowers... *************************************************** * MEB_Registered: 20122002 |

last night, as a surprise early birthday present, my partner took me to see billy connolly at the hordern pavillion (mid size rock venue) after his run at the sydney opera house. it's the first time i've seen him live, though we watch his tv shows etc. he was great. for over three hours he went, non stop apart from the odd point where he bent over double, covered his face with his hands and said "why the fuck was i talking about that?.. ah..." before picking up a long lost thread. i had to stop reacting for the middle hour because my face & jaw were so sore. |

Billy is the shizz: I know you have rock hard abs already, but mine were hella sore the day after we saw him in Brisbane.

forget the workout vids! just get a billy connolly live dvd! he was looking particularly trim, too. must have been the colonoscopy fast/purge he went on about in detail, or perhaps all that crazy exercise in the restroom (long rant about age & pissing)

Damn...
I've never wanted to go to Tennesee before, but a line up like that might warrant some desire. Head bloodied yet unbowed. |
