No no no no, I think we found a fulcrum date for the Vancouver meetup, if they're playing at the Commodore Ballroom.

Sinead O'Connor
Wonderful. I expected something similar to her last album (Theology) : very simple music, focus on singing. I was pleasantly surprised : the gig opened by rocking quite strongly. Goodly rock, it was indeed : The guitar was saturated, as guitars should always be ^^ The bass was sharp, loud and aggressive. So were the drums. Sinead was screaming her lungs out. I was trapped. I was so thrilled that I didn't mind at all when they switched to acoustic guitars after the first half of the show. The mix of rock with traditional celtic music does still work, and I really like it (when it's done, properly... not as a marketing trick). _____________________________ Albert's path is a strange and difficult one. |

The Smashing Pumpkins will be in Paris (Bercy) on February 6th 2008. Tickets are reasonably priced : 38 to 50 euros approximately. I'm definitely going! _____________________________ Albert's path is a strange and difficult one. |

OK All shows seem to be on presale here.
I have four GA, non-VIP tickets coming for the Commodore show, pretty damn expensive, but whatever. I would be delighted to meet any Wigbers who cared to attend, I have to say that the Commodore is my favourite venue on the planet, now that Le Spectrum de Montréal is no more. Last Ministry show I saw there was THE BOMB. According to some release or other that I saw quoted on Brooklyn Vegan, they are as usual expecting tons of special guests, last time Jello was there...anything is possible, I'd say. Since the girls I normally attend Ministry shows with are going to be 7 and 8 months pregnant, respectively, I will happily sell two spare tickets at cost; I may have a third available also, but won't know till later. Les Fatals Picards : Gundur, L'Intégrale at Le Lavoir Moderne Parisien
Awesome French-comedy-rock. I had seen episode 3 of Gundur et le Dauphin Magique last year : It's a fake Bollywood musical, that the band uses as a pretext for puns, jokes and introducing their songs. This new show is a condensed version of the three episodes. It makes even less sense, making it even more hilarious. For instance, at one point, a character (who is supposed to be living in ancient India) says : "It looks safe. But I suspect a conspiracy. A German conspiracy..." And that's the cue for the band to start playing a falsely-nostalgic song about Derrick's funeral. Silly, as I said. I, of course, bootlegged it : it's all here But my recording isn't that great, and I don't see who'd like to listen to that stuff in here, besides me _____________________________ Albert's path is a strange and difficult one. |

In other news :
Tonight is Eiffel's first time playing at the Olympia. It's also one of the last few gigs before the band either evolves or disappears, as incontested leader Romain Humeau puts it : they've lost their record label, and are not sure yet of what their next move is going to be. I'l be there. I won't record it, because I plan on being too busy moshing. _____________________________ Albert's path is a strange and difficult one. |

Ooooh, Eiffel. That will be a lot of fun, and they'll probably make it a special night seeing as it might be their last.
On thursday: Anathema and Porcupine Tree. Yay! |

That is the plan. And the fans have planned stuff of their own too (although I haven't been following that too closely). _____________________________ Albert's path is a strange and difficult one. |

RIDDIM COLLISION Festival
SCORN + Uzul Prod + Enduzer + Plaid sat, nov 3rd '07 Le Marché de Gros Arrived when Uzul Prod started its gig. Found the music quite enjoyable, combination of dub rhythms, electric guitar and some vocals. Not the kind of record I'd play at home but well done. But I really disliked what the VJ did. Playing lengthy sequences of the movie Gate of Hell / Jigokumon when there was a vaguely far-eastern melody was not lame enough: we saw complete sequences from TOOL videos. And not 1... 4 of them. I have the same DVD, obviously. All right, I do find these pictures are astonishing too. But there was no work around the material, just the original stuff, absolutely no creative process, except for a few video effects that never improved or allowed a new vision of the source. Moreover I suspect someone behind all this thinks he/she 's clever enough to show visual material taken from the "metal" scene and assume a "dub" audience won't know it. And, of course, we had to suffer through the usual from-a-train/car-window sequence, which is becoming mandatory. And each time more painful. That said, the music was much better. But you know how things are: not much to see on stage, your eyes are always attracted to huge screens. 2nd time I saw SCORN (like 10 years ago). Mick Harris and his last record are a take it or leave it experience. No open doors, no hooks of any kind, a claustrophobic environment. From the very beginning, ultra-low frequencies attack you physically, like the earth is shaking and you feel the air pushed by the sound system. Dirty rhythms and samples impose a repetitive vibration. Hypnotic twisted loops, and soon you're carried by the music, in every sense of the word, as the ground under your feet becomes an undulating mass. A good set, perhaps lacking diversity, but you've come to hear SCORN, and Mick Harris delivers. And, oh, did I mention the Tetsuo sequences on the screens ? Left when Plaid started their second track. Really not my thing. -<) |

Reviews like this and Mr. Push's make me realize what a bourgeoisie taste in music I have.
