this one got me all watery-eyed.

also, last week the NYT had a piece with Wu-Tang's RZA about the launch of his hip-hop chess social network site, Wu-Chess.

Wu-Chess looks ill conceived and poorly planned even from a spliff smokin' hood named RZA. That being said, he was brilliant in "Coffee and Cigarettes" and the New York Times cuts tha brother some slack (for the kids) in this article and then sucker punches him when Dylan Loeb McClain plays him in game you can view online here.

boots, YEAH! Depth is good.

I said this at colin's Pinnacle thread -- Real Genius immediately evokes an entire subgenre of mid 80's movies. Kid geniuses, with enough electronic junk, can do anything. The closest we come today are independent emaciated z-budget self-serious Primers and etc.

(nod) We didn't know what to watch, so the nice girl at the video store recommend "Death to Smoochy". What a delightful cynical overdose.

Sage Splitcoil life strategy, thanks.

By the way, overlooked or looked over? --

To your objection ("but those are hardly overlooked"), I retort: check the box office numbers. Inspired the best new Lost character in a long while (Lapidus):

It was huge in Australia but I don't think it really had an impact overseas, a bit too aussie for foreigners I guess.

And if the guy looks familiar, that's because it's Eric Bana. Legendary guy.

He lived in my town for a while. Saw him walking towards me one day with his mates. I ducked into the nearest shop till they passed.

Yes, I am a coward and I want to keep my toes too.

I wouldn't call it half the comedy masterpiece that is, say, Orgazmo, but nonetheless it was entertaining.

I just happened to (FINALLY) watch this last week after being a huge fan of the book for years. I think it was a fairly good adaptation. Highly recommended.

Real Genius is a great film. Indeed, the pinnacle of a certain kind of 80's paranoia/comedy.

That both Edwards (from Gotcha) and Kilmer wound up in Top Gun only serves to prove that film was made directly at the behest of the zeitgeist.

I have been waiting 11 years for him to make another film.

heavyboots, I second your nomination of both Freeway and The Limey. I'm currently watching the very overlooked 2000 movie, The Way of the Gun.
I don't know Trogdor, but the character Abner Mercer in this film is what I picture him like after reading his QST thread.

Great little science-fiction number. Like The Matrix, but bleaker, and sans Keanu.

Got Dash from Blue Heelers in it.

Made unsettlingly soon after Mark's accident, thus unable to conceal the dog's breakfast said accident made of his face. Mitigated by the sensuously lucent Annie Potts.

(Forget the inexcusably emetic mod rod).

The Big Caper (1957)
Delightful noir with an undertone of sleaze. Based on veteran noir novelist Lionel White's book. White also wrote "The Killing," basis of Kubrick's debut film. The relationship between the gang kingpin (James Gregory) and his bodyguard (Corey Allen) is amazingly kinky for the period.

Excellent addition to the list. I've got the DVD but my list for this thread is NetFlix-only. I haven't even perused the DVDs that I haven't rated on 'Flix yet, lol...

Man, I'm queuing a bunch more stuff from this thread at any rate! Big Grin
