Just watched a nasty video on nbc.com of a Hungarian weightlifter dislocating his elbow during the clean and jerk.
The most surreal part was the little team of polite Chinese who scurried out with logo emblazoned boards to stand and block the view of the athlete while his trainers rushed to him. -- |

I saw that nasty stuff online.

OK. You heard it here first, "the 2008 Beijing global distraction and cross-cultural excuse to force a fake smile Olympics" is over!
Here is the list of winning-losers that by choosing not to boycott China's internal genocide help to propagate and provide global legitimacy for China's campaign of ruthless ethnic cleansing. Many of my people said, "never again," but I think what they meant was never again to them. May his Holiness give us one point compassion in times of dark inhuman suffering. And with that necessary bullshit political statement out of the way, let us rejoice together in the pinnacle of human achievement together!

The US tends to report medals by total medal haul, which puts them at #1, whereas here at least we rank it by gold first, which puts China at #1. It could be that the US approach has always been that way, I'm not sure.
A 3,2,1 point ranking system might be slightly different. Of course, as a triumphalist nationalist Aussie I'd like to point out that we'd totally be ranked first on a medals per capita table. ________________________ differently mediated |

sorry, here;s the medals per capita table
Jamaica beats you, as well as 3 other flukes, but oz is awesome. It not only does well on this table but on the standard one too... I always check this one to see if Canada beat the u.s. We did, but barely. The u.s. are just good at sports. this site has some other cool ratings. Canada doesn't do as well on golds per capita. I think a table where a gold got 3 points a silver 2 and a bronze 1 over population would be good. GDP is a good idea too. |

Ah, awesome - yeah, after I posted I realised that I was thinking only of big countries, and there may well be tiny ones who beat us. And Jamaica should have leapt instantly to mind.
That's a great find, thanks for sharing. ________________________ differently mediated |

I read a funny editorial on winning medals in weird sports. Apparently britain is going to be pushing that idea in 2012. At one point our only medals were in trampoline and woman's wrestling...finally a solid diver, swimmer, and woman's hurdler came along luckily.
Winter games are next about half an hour drive from here in both directions (whistler/vancouver) I hope they go as well.. |

Interesting shots from the games. Some great pictures; a couple are NSFW.
