The possibility of an online WGB shootout makes me wonder if UT will run on an iMac DV 400mHz with 192MB of RAM. The Apple equivalent of MOM's toaster oven, basically, except mine's a festive blue. Guess I need to score a copy of the game too, then. Hm.

quote: Ahh, the classics. Facing Worlds! Facing Worlds! And the best ever sniper maps has to go to CTF-Crater of Snipers. It's hard, even on easy bots, but you can up the tension with the sniper arena and invisible mutators. Google for the "Avenging Clan of the Dead Cats" and go to their downloads page. CTF is my preffered modus operandi and allows for really good teamwork. UT got me where I am today; instead of studying for exam week, I spent it playing UT with my mates. Bummed a switch of the school's sysadmin and cobbled a bunch of PC's together. The original UT's, I think, is probably the best for an online tourney - it's been around so long so any support for it is huge, can be run on four year old hardware, and the maps are nice and small. And I love it. And, yes, the apple-and-penguin crews can get in on the act. For those with the older boxes, if you don't have a 3d card, an upgrade to a Nvidia TNT2 or Geforce 2 would run UT nicely. And these cards are so old, there's probably a few mum and dad computer stores that'll sell ya one cheap or even give it away. The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

YES!
Someone posts a thread directed at the computer dorks, and within the first page it turns into the inevitable gaming discussion. Remember kids, the internet loves you. Even though sometimes it touches you in the bad place. |

Grr - so I'm trying to get it sorted: 'Bravus' House', Version 436, on 161.184.9.127 (until I reboot the router and get DHCPed), and all the relevant ports are forwarded, but I still can't spot it on the web. I'll keep hacking away at it, but if anyone else wants to (a) volunteer to host or (b) suggest a server...

quote: Uh, ma'am? My lead-off post specifically mentioned that I was trying to figger out if'n I had enough kibblebytes of RAM to run a first-person shooter game. But if it mutates into a 1200-post clearing-house thread for basic computing questions, well, that would be fine by me. *ding* Oh, look at that. My toast is ready. |

What i meant to say was:
"the chick on the other end of the line was Irish, and no offence to them, couldn't understand a word she was saying." I'm meant to be listening to some guys presentation on computer security. The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

Therefore, all technical support questions are actually about gaming. incidentally, I only do rpg's. I'll have none of that new-fancy shooter crap. Remember kids, the internet loves you. So apparently somebody bumped the chickens foot voodoo charm on top of the SDLT drive because the SCSI chain was down on the file server tonight. Thusly, I wouldn't have had a chance to play UT in any case 'cause it took about 3 hours to find the proper incantations to bring it back to life. However, I'm up for it pretty much any other night...
BTW, Anarcho, I'm afraid "acquire" is going to be about the only way you'll get UT. They haven't sold it in stores for years! I used to have anextra box (at one point they were giving it away with Mac game mag subscriptions), but it's grown legs and wandered off. Wow, I'm writing from OS 9. So much grey... |

Herr, I just love your new avatar and sig. I like to think of what newbies must think of you at first glance. The irony is sorta pretty.

This goes all the way back to a phenomenon I observed in the arcades way back in the late 80's. All (two of them) the girls would be gathered around the Centipede, Tetris (early 90's for Tetris?), and Pacman variants. Then there's all the shooter games, driving games, side-scroller games, fighter games... and all the guys.
Don't know if it holds true in today's arcade or not. Actually, I have no clue what the inside of today's arcade looks like. Do they have dance machines and stuff in there now? I've been to a pool hall to play air hockey about twice since the millenium. Finally managed to kick those quarter-suckers apparently. |
