Bad sign that... the orange-green blinking lights. If there is audio on the pod and it doesn't want to play that means something hella wrong. Download the latest iPod updater from the apple website, install that, plug in the shuffle, see if it detects the damn thing and if it does hit either 'restore'. If that doesn't fix the problem, send the damn thing back to apple. If your computer doesn't detect the shuffle or can't access it (either through iTunes or Explorer), send the shuffle back to apple. I'm on my third shuffle and both had that problem. The first one after some 6 months, the second after two to three months. Luckely that was still in warranty so they send me the replacements for free each time. Also, iTunes is a very good media player (i love how you can organise your files in neat playlists and libraries with it). It shouldn't fuck with audio quality at all. Now what might be the issue with that is that iTunes and RealPlayer have different audio settings in the program. For instance the RealPlayer can have the volume up to maximum while in iTunes the volume is set low. There's also an equaliser in iTunes which can help you adjust the music output to match whatever speaker setup you have. It's nifty. I'd dump Real in a second, but that's just me... |

in all seriousness though, iTunes does have different sets of defaults than other players. you will probably need to access the sound options in control panel in windows and then the preferences in iTunes to get it to sound like you are used to. (this is akin to adjusting the contrast and brightness, etc, on a new tv or monitor, or EQ ing a new stereo, not something that is 'broken' out of the box.)
PS - since you are using windows, I highly recommend WinAmp. *************************************************** * MEB_Registered: 20122002 |

after bravus mentioned it we decided to go with it and everything's great. itunes by the way pulled up every one of the videos my daughter has done of herself with her camera. i find that really intrusive. i know that it reckons it's being helpful but i don't see it that way at all. you know it automatically placed every one of her videos in 'my library' and not a single one of the songs we have? don't care, that's just plain dodgy. got the shuffle working fine. the uninstall/reinstall sorted it. and no, i have no plans to buy another computer. this one'll do for a good ten years i'm sure. oh and thanks again guys. |

It should have asked first. No, really, it should have: a dialogue box should have come up when you first started up the iTunes for the first time, asking if you would like it to find audio and video files on your computer. You can then tell it "no, I'll add them myself".
It probably didn't grab the .mp3s in your collection because you kept RealPlayer associated with them, but I'm not too sure if that should have made a difference. That's how it has always worked for me. »» "Forget infinity. I've got books waiting for me to read them." — colin »»"Speculative novels of last Tuesday." — William Gibson |

Actually, what I'll bet it means is that iTunes can read the video format your daughter did her movies in, but not the audio format your tunes are stored in. But that's just a guess. They do ask if you want it to scan or not. And if you don't, then you can manually add by dropping things on the iTunes window or icon, even on Windows, iirc. |

Damn. I thought my computer problems were going away after whatever I did, but then I log on here and suddenly I'm getting these extremely long delay times. Then it all freezes up and I have to reboot. At the moment it seems to be working fine, but I don't know what's going on. Should I just take it in to MicroCenter or something? Can you trust places like that?

Wow. Thanks Bic. It's high-speed cable and I'm already using Firefox, but I never did get around to defragging the disk; Firewall on; been using Norton anti-virus but it seems incapable of actually deleting what it finds. The first time I started having problems, the manufacturers prescribed a new graphics card, but that turned out to be a temporary fix. Then the warranty ran out. But it doesn't seem to be degenerating now like it was before. Chances are I have configuration problems no matter what else is going on, if anything, so I'll run down your list and see what happens. Thanks for the life-line! I have a learning disability when it comes to technical things.

It needs to be on a server already, so you need a server account and an ftp program. I recently discovered SmartFTP, which is free for private use, and I use a free server account at portland.co.uk, though of course there are other options. So you set up your account, upload your picture to it, then use the {img} tags or the image button above the post window to post the picture.

Hey guys. I've been trying unsuccessfully to get to the internet on my computer downstairs from my computer upstairs(at the only non-bootlegged cable jack). I've set up an ad-hoc wireless network with no security and have been able to transfer files and i've enabled internet connection sharing, but I still can't actually access the internet. Pls help!

Hmmm, that's a tricky one to diagnose from here. All-Windows system? All the same version? (XP, 2000, whatever) What are the symptoms when you fail to get out to the web. Just 'page not found'? You could try opening a command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd in XP or 2k) and typing in, e.g. 'ping bravus.com'. That will let you know whether packets are getting out to the web or not.
While you have the command window open, you can type 'ipconfig' and see what it tells you about the IP address of that computer. Oh, and I'd strongly suggest adding some WAP security to the connection, if you don't want (best case) neighbours leeching your bandwidth or (worst case) crime or child pr0n stuff done from your IP address. ________________________ "you are powerless against that to which you are oblivious" - Splitcoil |

Good calls on everything, Bic. Just a note to Boolean that in Windows you still set up these internet options using IE even if you're using another browser normally. Integration, doncha know...
