There are also free online services that will turn a Word doc into a pdf... it'd be an ugly kludge, but you could copy the graphics into a Word doc and sort them out then send the result to such a service.

I hate McAfee.

Does anyone know how to completely shut down the McAfee security center (VirusScan, Firewall and SpamKiller) ?
Before sending out this month's emailing i shut down everything i could in the security center: the firewall, the virusscan, the activeshield and the spamkiller. Thinking it was safe now, i hit "send".

After five messages sent:
"BLING! Five or more messages have been sent in the past 30 seconds, this indicates possible wurm activity. Do you want to:
- block this email
- continue"

So now i'm clicking continue for every mail in my 1000 plus emailing (currently little over halfway, got about half an hour of clicking continue left to go). It'd be really nice to find a way to switch off McAfee so that it's actually, you know, off.

Sorry, can't help with that one... though I'd love to know the answer. I terminated McAfee with extreme prejudice off my work laptop... and was then forced to put it back on due to 'policy'.

Got one of my own: is there a particular download manager you can recommend? I'm d/ling a GetRight trial at the moment, and I've used it and been happy with it in the past, but it does cost...

And here's my question: Can anyone recommend a tiff to jpg converter. I see a few online, but they are either expensive, or they look shady.

If you have any kind of program to play around with images it should do that already. Open the image, Save image as.. and there you should be able to pick a format.

Did you manage to generate a .pdf?

Archie,

You might try sourceforge. There's a tool there called imagemagick that might do what you want.

Also, MS Office might have some tools, and I think there's a Microsoft PhotoEditor (or something) that might do what you want.

Bummer. It came with my laptop, too. And while i sorta like how it does it's firewall and virusscan, i think i prefer Norton when it comes to managability. Specially now. I think i might actually get in touch with McAfee support for this one.

^^ Yeah, there's that. There's "DownThemAll," a free extension for FireFox that's pretty featureful, though it does have weird bugs (keep at least one browser window open at all times while you're using it; if you close all browser windows while DTA is running, you can't open any new ones until you close the DTA window, and DTA doesn't download unless you have the DTA window open.)

After a ton of begging and cajoling, my artist was able to get it done in the nick of time.

I second De Eezame Belg. The Norwegians were good for a few things - inventing the modern hand grenade, stopping the Nazi's nuclear weapons program, and sending me that extremely hot brunette in my International Journalism class.

And Opera. Best browser in the world.

i didn't want to shut down any processes or services while sending out the mailing. It's sort of a thing that once you've started it it's better to bit the bullet and move on instead of risking fucking up the delivery of the mailing.
I've since delved deeply into the advanced settings and might've found a way to shut down the scanning of outgoing emails. But i think it only works after restarting, so maybe that's where i went wrong in the first place.

we've just been emailed what i assume is a picture of some kind that we need to view to do a quote. the machine can't work out what to open it with, and i've tried the usual suspects.

it's an MCD. what the heck is that?

A photo of a Big Mac?

More usefully, this page: http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=MCD

Could it be a MinCAD drawing?

You may have to ask the client to re-send it in another format.

oh thanks, bic! i've got the attention span of a gnat, and i'm fantastic at leaving it all behind at the end of my work day. they seem to have muddled through with the other drawing but i'll see if i can impress em on wednesday (next day at work).

my partner's just asked me to ask for recommendations for adware spyware stuff, we've used adaware SE professional and spyware blaster but there's still this damn ancestry site opens up when we boot up. it's IE that it's opening on, my partner reckons he's blocked the site or something within it but we just can't seem to shake it.

any suggestions for cost and risk free fixes? (don't tell him to do anything manual or i promise you, he'll break it!!)(shit hope he doesn't read this)(well it's true. sue me!)

we don't use it much at all, it's mostly for when my partner checks a webiste he's making on the different browsers. i use it for my hotmail, just to be awkward. and that's it. otherwise it's all firefox. that makes it even more annoying. just as firefox's loading IE will pop up with the damn ancestors.

bit by bit we're cleaning out all the shit i think.

My Firefox fixed itself after a few days. It had trouble showing image files, but now it's fine.

Here is another one.

I'm currently burning a dvd with Nero, .avi files to dvd. It will take something like 10 hours! Is it normal? And if yes, anyone knows of another program that works faster? I mean, 10 hours?!?
