I actually had exposure to Virtual Dub over the weekend and must agree that it's pretty cool!

Windows Update has broken. It's stuck at 45% download on a new update, and nothing I can do will clear its throat. Tried installing the updates with the Windows Update web site instead, but that didn't work either. Tried uninstalling a few of the latest updates to see if that was the problem, but no joy. All the help files mention particular error codes, but I'm not getting error codes, just stagnation.

Sometimes, a received wisdom would have it that the answer is a user focus group, a pickup-truck of shotguns and ammo, and a day outing. Ymmvt.

They all live on the same Campus, so turn up at dawn and leave at dusk. Maybe split-group for multi-site. It could be a quake/doom game, played on the internet, with in-game comms to link the in-game multi-site team outings. Potential headlines for a new game company or a team looking for recognition for employment. Massive scope for back-firing. I should take out ads.

* Have you an AMD64 processor?
* Have you tried updating though the "help and support" feature of windows?
* Have you got Norton?
* Are you using NVIDIA GFX?
* Install KB908531 ? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyi...DB936&displaylang=en
* Roll back drivers to MS Default drivers?

OK, I wasn't scientific about it: I d/led and installed the update, then tried to update via Help and Support. One or other thing or the combination worked and it's sorted. Thanks muchly.

I finished rebuilding my music library. At least parts of it. Added a lot of new stuff too. 71 GB of music (Including Classic and audio books).

Mmmm... I should make a back up.

I bought a second external drive in January, after Fatal Loss Of Data.

320 GB (well 300 really) - 211 are still free. Cloning right now...

Trying to make my MySpace less than completely butt-ugly. Not that I even use it that much, but it offends me to have my name and photo on something that ugly. Any suggestions for custom layouts, hiding or moving some ads and so on (disclaimer disclaimer within the TOS disclaimer) would be very welcome.

Graphics problems...

Last night, my PC lost power. And, upon rebooting it, my display was covered in odd, light cyan bands.

Now, this happened before, and normally a reboot fixes it.

But not this time. Now, it seems, it's here for good. I've left everything unplugged for an hour, reinstalled graphics and various mobo drivers (VIA 4-In-1), degaussed my monitor, unplugged my monitor, sacrified a newborn baby to the ghost of Gordon Moore, and stood on my head. Nothin'.

While not fatal, it is shitting me.

Any help?

Is this a CRT or an LCD? Are the bands horizontal or vertical? Have you borrowed another monitor to see if it's your monitor or not? Have you plugged your monitor into another machine (even a laptop via the auxiliary display port)?

I take it KG, BNE is nowhere near Surrey, UK, otherwise you could have the 17" Iiyama CRT monitor I'm about to chuck out.

It could be the monitor, however, it is more likely to be a problem with the graphic card or cable.

Is it a laptop or desktop computer?

Like gil adviced, first step is definatly to test all the components in the chain, till you identified the faulty one.

Anyway, your data us most likely save and sound on the harddrive, and thats the most important thing, now isn't it?

Sound's fine, HDD's fine. It's a desktop.

Monitor's CRT and the bands are horizontal.

Also, scrolling with either the mousewheel, arrow keys or PGUP-PGDN isn't smooth. It's flickering, lagging and also turns the bands from stripes to solid cyan.

Trying not to fork out for new parts...

have you tried turning just the monitor on? access the onboard menu to see if the banding occurs only from the PC signal or is from the gun....

if it's the gun you're probably fux0r3d.

if not, try removing the video card, wave it in the air a few times, then reseat it.....

maybe also try demagnetizing your cable.....

I unplugged the monitor from the graphics card last night, and noticed that when the "NO SIGNAL" screen saver came up it looked fine, the same as it always did. No banding.

Will try the removal of the graphics card soon. Don't have time now.

Danke.

not sure if there is software that does it but a simple way to do it would be to open firefox, create a group of tabs. each tab should be open to one of the blog's submission/entry page. bookmark this group of tabs. open a text editor and type up your blog. copy the text, then open your blog tabs. go tab to tab pasting into each one. couldn't take mroe than a minute once you have the tabs bookmarked.....
