My best guess about Sartemius' problem is that the heat conducting paste on the back of the CPU itself (the takes heat from the CPU to the heatsink) has worn off/boiled off/shifted. Get some Arctic Silver or equivalent, read the instructions carefully, check the web for instructions for your particular processor and re-apply. It fixed an overheating problem for me. If that doesn't work an aftermarket cooling solution might be necessary.

Just to add context to conjecture, what is the make and model of your computer? Be as detailed as possible.

Next, when was the last time you cleaned out the inside of your computer?

Its possible your computer will still work in warm weather. You should try blowing out any dust and debris that are clogging the fan dust filters and the fins of the CPU and chipset heatsinks. (Buy a can of 'canned air' for this.)

In addition, check that your fans are all working. Replace any fan that is not spinning.

If all that does not work, try Bravis's suggestion.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help.

I've got to take some time and go through the computer to make sure everything is right. I've been a bit busy the last couple of days so haven't touched it.

Did wash yesterday. I ironed everything tonight. I'm being shifted at work back to selling Electronics from Lawn & Garden so I have too much on my mind as usual.

I'll put the computer info up if nothing else works.

heya.

this is aimed directly at bravus, gromit, lith & robw. we're shopping around for a new provider at home, and are considering lumping our landline & mobile in with maybe adsl2. have you come across anyone particularly noteworthy? as it is, we're using telstra for phones & exetel for our internet. telstra isn't worthwhile with the adsl2, from what we can see, optus looks ok but it'll involve changing all over to them.

whadayareckon fellas?

Hmm, there's one advertising on the buses at the moment here for ADSL2 from 30 bucks a month, and when I checked them out they seemed decent.

Gimme a sec to check...

PS We're out in the sticks and not DSL2 capable....

You just reminded me to check the chances in the places we're thinking of moving to.

thanks, bravus.

we've gone with tpg at work - not very impressed so far. reeeeally patchy.

we might stick with our current mob, even though they cancel the plan we're on every year and try to push us into an upgrade.

This question is not about 'quote' and '/quote' in square brackets, right?

Here, it seems to be as Hasa says, with an automatically generated "Originally posted by ..." inserted in the newly generated reply, rather than a name embedded as a value in the "quote" tags.

Ooooh! So that's what the "Reply with quote" button is for?!

I never tried it, in all these years...

hey all! it's da hydra. back for but a simple question.

Please help me to Convert (4 FREE) DRM protected WMA files to MP3s.

I've spent the last few days downloading damn near every song I ever
wanted or thought I possibly needed only to find out that these
BearShare.com WMA files are 30 day DRM protected. fuck. So, of course,
I researched it, but there appear to be no free programs or combination out there help make pristine new MP3 out of my defiled DRM WMA
Help anyone PLEASE...
BTW. my sober date is March 2, 2006. I'm still sober.

I don't know off the top of my head. Any cracks for WMA's DRM have probably been hunted down, shot, drawn, quartered, skinned, tanned, and beheaded by now. Let their heads preach on poles. Or at least assimilated into the Microsoft Mothership.

Was wondering how BearShare got away with having that "Legal P2P" badge on their website, unless all they can distribute are DRM'ed WMA files.

Good to hear from you, o manyheaded, and grats on the sobriety.

My cheap and dodgy hack tends to be burning them to CD as audio CDs and re-ripping as mp3. Time-consuming and CD-consuming, but simple and virtually foolproof (though not guaranteed lossless).

Will go looking for a more sophisticated batch-type solution.

Yeah, not seeing anything consistently working out there. There are some ways to play the WMA on Windows Media Player and record it to mp3 at the same time in real time, but that's even more fiddly and time-consuming. Wonder whether it's possible to burn 'virtual CDs' on the hard drive, which would be faster and could potentially be bigger (or, even better, virtual music DVDs) and then 'rip' those to mp3... cutting out the lasers and plastic...

Yeah, burning to an image of an audio CD (or a bin/cue file) could work, but I think that DRMed WMA files can only be burned to CD from within Windows Media Player (similarly, DRMed AAC files can only be burned in iTunes; I can't burn them in Toast).

I have an i-book running i-tunes 1.x under Finder 9.x. Will turn any DRM protected files or CDs into mp3. Not a solution for everyone, however.
