I came home to find that Firefox has installed some sort of update that killed all my bookmarks. If anyone has an idea how to recover them, I would be quite grateful. It was an extensive list and will that was almost three years of accumulation and probably impossible to duplicate.

Further investigation shows that my files have been messed with as well, the culprit may be Mr. Gates' OS instead of Firefox by itself. Bah!

Oh dear...if you get them back, you might try the firefox extension (Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer) that carries your bookmarks from this PC to that? I don't think M$ can kill that.

Oh sorry Lester...

Can't be Firefox, they are the good guys...

I lost all my bookmarks once and simply googled them back-

But I don't depend on records and order as I can't maintain it so..

Actually, I think Firefox *does* occasionally eat its bookmarks. I can't remember where they're stored on PC though. The folder that the actual prefs reside inside is called Profiles, I know that much.

Or search for a folder called "bookmarkbackups". It appears to back up the bookmarks to this folder whenever you launch it.

That folder does indeed hold links to all the bookmarks I had. The recovery process will be tedious, but doable. Thank you sir for lightening the burden of this day. I am truly grateful for the good people here.

Thanks again.

I found that a document I was working on yesterday would not spell check from the point at which I began writing yesterday. I circumvented the issue, I think, but do not know what casued or how to fix it properly.

I tried going into Tools>Languages>Then making sure do not check grammar was not checked.

Didn't work.

Tried a couple of thikngs on Microsoft Help Site, but didn't do nothin'.

Thoughts?

EDIT: I got a new error message when I looked at the docu again, found it was not circumvented. However, armed with the message I found an article that related to the issue via Google.

I think it is alright now.

I purchased an unlocked phone on ebay. As it turns out, the phone is made for a T-Mobile network and won't allow me to access my cingular network on it. I've looked into various fixes and all of them seem like more work than I'm willing to do. The eBay seller has agreed to exchange the phone if i fill out a return form. One of the fields on the form asks me for my phone number. I don't see how that information is necessary to them if I am just using a sim card. Is it necessary?

Firefox 2.0.0.9 on WinXP is getting lots of 404s, and the wreckage seems to suggest that what it's doing is appending the URL of the previous page visited onto the end of the current URL. Any idea what's going on, whether it's a hijack and how to fix it?

An update on my bookmark loss the other day: when I went to the computer this morning, all my bookmarks were back in place as if they had never been missing. Whatever happened to them corrected itself. I have no idea how this happened, but I'm not complaining. At least I know what to do if it happens in a permanent way.

Hmm, that's my version and I haven't had any issues like that (yet!! touch wood).

Is that the newest version? I've been getting the "Updates are Available!" box for a couple weeks now, and keep clicking "Update later." I tend to only update Firefox when necessary...

Yeah, this is the newest... but my best guess is that it's not Firefox but something else. Will try both IE and Opera and see whether they have similar issues or not.

I've been using 2.0.0.9 (on XP) for a few weeks on multiple computers and had no issues. Did you have any add-ons installed?

How many web pages will I get into 100MB space?

Average pages will have 4 or 5 lo-res pics and text. Hand coded vs. Frontpage 2000. There'll be a weekly blog to run over 12 months.

Can anyone recommend a decent, cheap web hosting company?

Personal recommendations are always better than googling IMO. I hung off buying Pipex space as it seemed quite expensive for what it was; circa £2 p/month for 100mb and a £10 setup fee.

Quite a few, actually. Web pages (just html) don't top out at more than 10 to 20 kilobytes unless you're writing a novel or longer papers (I have made a couple that hit 200K). The photos themselves will be separate files from the web pages, so if you compress those to under 100 K each, you could fit a thousand or so.

(100 MB = 102,100 K)
(1 MB = 1021 K)
(1 K = 1021 bytes)

If you're looking for a way to easily blog, I'd find a service that bundles in Wordpress or other blogging software (or lets you install it yourself). That way, all you have to do is theme the site, blog away, and add the photos as you need to.
