Good man. I know the maths and was intending to install Wordpress server side as its a free download. From experience, FrontPage pages are full of overheads and heavy on code, but I'm unsure how heavy - its a tough choice, to hand code and learn the intricacies of web programming to keep it lean, or to take the easier, faster but heavy wizard route via FrontPage? I don't want to get hung up on the technology, rather concentrating on the content whilst keeping the style clear and simple. Still wondering how many FP pages will fit in 100mb space? Any FrontPage users out there? This message has been edited. Last edited by: Bictaker, |

Well, I wanted a a) make sure I got the math(s) right myself, and b) thought it'd be useful for those who aren't as familiar with how computer data works.
I'd hand-code and use CSS to style everything. Later versions of FrontPage seem to do a better job of generating clean code, but I'm a Dreamweaver fan. »» "Forget infinity. I've got books waiting for me to read them." — colin »»"Speculative novels of last Tuesday." — William Gibson |

Frontpage is evil, and there's a special circle of hell reserved just for people who use it.
There have been reports of simple pages with a bit of text and an image that, when coded with frontpage, ended up being 40kb of code. Not kidding. Seriously, don't use it. Ever. |

BicTaker, nsdesign.co.uk is an excellent ISP. Forget Pipex, I wasted time on them. With nsdesign, their 24hr service from techs who know what they're doing, and their FREE blogs on nsblog.co.uk.
Frontpage (spit) is available on their Linux plan - 200Meg webspace about £25 / year. There's Fantastico for that, too. I cannot recommend them enough, and I've had a web presence since 1997 on various ISPs. |

And now we're into WebGeneratorWars, I favour hand-coding myself, or 1stPage as a sort of harness for hand-coding.
Every WebGenerator is a bit bloated, but Dreamweaver seems better than most. And don't even think about making a Word Document and then outputting it in html, though OpenOffice does not a bad job in that department. |

I once attended an NT4 IIS 4.0 course where the lecturer taught us rudimentary HTML in the lunch periods! Not so bad... I've knocked up a FrontPage 98 site a few years back and really hate it when I come across a template site on the web now! Always assumed most webgenerators were the same as FP even though it has bad press as its an M$ app. Dreamweaver? Difficult to master or nice wizards and templates? Any others in the mix? |

I have used 1stpage 2000 a long time ago, but traded it in for Dreamweaver. I never really use the WYSIWYG features of Dreamweaver though, it's always in code view, allthough i would on rare occasions use the built in behaviours (for form validation for instance).
But yeah, 1stpage is good... it's recommended to use that over that program who's name shall be unspoken. |

Dreamweaver does have a small amount of templates, but of course the fun is in creating something yourself and not just filling in a generic design.

I used to recommend Dreamhost. They're still quite cheap and they will do some nifty stuff like throw in a free domain name, etc. They also have Joomla as a one-click install.
However, been having a bit of trouble saving pages back to the server from Mambo recently. Not 100% sure if it is their fault or not, but it can be annoying. And as for designing a page, usually my default mode of operation is to buy and modify an existing CSS template for the CMS I am using or hack something together in DweamReaver/GoVile. |

OK, found myself a Dreamweaver programmer for free - my son! Turns out he's been using it for a few months in school IT class.
Q: Heard a rumour that Dreamweaver embeds its serial number etc in the code. How does this work with a pirated copy? Can it be traced? |

Lol! Sorry but that's just too funny. I thought you worked in IT, man.

Lol indeed.
Seriously, Bic : you're a programmer. HTML is the easiest thing in the world (proper style and design are another matter). Just edit the source code after Dreamweaver generates it, and see if anything suspicious is in there. A clue : no _____________________________ Albert's path is a strange and difficult one. |

I use, and am very happy with, Siteground hosting. It's US$60 a year, so maybe more than you were looking at already, but very full-featured and a nice combination of having web-based tools to do thingsbut also giving full access if you know other ways...

I need this for a novel.
I need a name for a file that night be found in an old (circa 1994) computer. One that would have a long, string-like name. And I need to know what a list of those files might look like. Without them being Windows, more like brining up the list in DOS. --- "Your enthusiasm for sporting events reveals nothing about the human condition except by way of irony." |

files from back then most likely would have names that were 8 or 16 characters in length max....

8 characters for filename, 3 for extension. Not all characters are legal. DOS filenames |

What would the extensionbe for a blueprint or schematic? .doc?
