I'm convinced these people don't speak English. What's a considered a utility, and what then would be a vertical application?

A vertical application is the stack of paperwork on top of my tower.

"Utility" is just a fancy word for "program." Like "application."

I read the link, and while the guy means well, he fails to realise that one of the biggest chunks of computer sales is taken up by guy who still care about how many frames a sec they'll get with the new Geforce and two gig of Corsair.

I would imagine that while WinDVD, for instance, is considered a program the thingie we use to change regions would be an application or utility. As for vertical, I'd to agree with Kradlum and extend it to my whole room!

i would consider software that does many things which are interrelated to be an application, like a word processor or an image editing program. A utility is software that does one thing only, maximising effectiveness in one simple task, like batch renaming of files, or defragging a hard drive. no idea what was meant by vertical application, except perhaps it would be an application that effectively takes control of the entire system, such as a 3D FPS game like Quake. When you launch Quake, the OS pretty much goes away, and you only have the one program to interface with. This could be considered vertical in that it is typical to imagine software layers stacked upon one another when considering how software relates to hardware, ie: hardware under Kernel under OS GUI under Applications and Utilities, and at the top of the heap, a game or video player. Given this context vetical applications could also apply to programs which function in multiple layers.

I'm guessing "vertical application" is just a wank word, like "synergy".

In my book, vertical refers to how high your computer goes after you kick the crap outta it for crashing with said application.

Very nice, dragon. I guess the vertical apps in my industry are RageMaker, eXPress, and UnDesign. Er, loosely speaking. Or if you want to gain even more altitude, FlightCheck. No one but people sending stuff to press gives a crap whether they have hairlines or unused spot colors in their document or not. Smile

Stupid Apple Questions:

  • Do favorites work the same way as in Internet Deplorer?
  • Can I import my old favorites from a Windows computer? (I have several hundred links saved.)
  • Can I disable ALL piezo-electric and speaker sounds on a Mac Mini?
  • Will this lead to my wearing suspenders and reading books about Linux?

1. Yes, Favorites work the same way, though in Safari and Firefox they're just called Bookmarks.
2. I have no idea, as I haven't tried to import favorites from IE on Windows to Safari or Firefox on a Mac.

EDIT: A quick google gave me this: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_FAQs_:_Import_IE_Bookmarks

Basically, follow the export directions on your windows machine, get the resulting file onto your mac (via CD or network or something; I leave this up to you), then import the file into Safari or Firefox using the same directions (at least for Firefox; I assume it would work similarly for Safari).
3. Open "System Preferences" and choose the "Sounds" preference pane. Under the "Sound Effects" tab, you can choose different sound effects, and you can uncheck the checkboxes for "Play user interface sound effects" and "Play feedback when volume keys are pressed"
4. I always figured it would lead you to dressing like a metrosexual geek, but who knows, these days. Smile

with an XP box, when i run Diskeeper I see that a non-OS partition on a second physical hard disk has an enormous "Reserved system space" section of about 30 gigs.
Anyone know how I can access and find what kind of files are occuping that space or is XP just literally reserving that space? The computer is already set to show hidden and system files but no luck exploring them thus far.
My trash bin is down 1% of disk space so it's not that nor the swap file.
Any ideas?

MOM, just in case, as a backup, email your favorites to yourself to your gmail account.

I know that cartoon well. I'm afraid I'm already far worse than that when it comes to wristwatches.

Thank you both for your comments.

Oh man, how'd you like to wake up to find your desktop look like this?

Somehow I don't think that popup window offering the opportunity to make somebody's day brighter is actually an app that restores your computer, because that's the only thing that would make my day brighter. Fortunately this was on somebody's Virtual PC which he set up to see how bad the spyware and malware could get. Looks like he found out.

Edited the image to make it smaller. Click it for the full-sized version.

I simply must ask, MOM. What's up with not having sound on your computers? You've mentioned it before, but I don't think you've explained it.

Would your PC happened to be manufactured by, say, a company such as HP, IBM, Dell, Compaq or any of those heavies?

They're infamous for "reserving" whole hunks of disk space for their brand-specific software, designed to do such things as monitor if you change your hardware or mirror the whole OS and My Docs folder in order to back it up if something goes screwy. A lot of it hust amounts to spyware, to send back info to the goons in Market Research.

It is a pain in the arse, royally. My mate has a 2.2gig partition on his 40gig he can't touch on his HP, another had this problem with a Compaq. What's really bad is that they'll advertise "200gig HDD" and you can't touch thirty...lying pricks.

Other than that? Buggers me.

*Probably.
*See Above. Save 'em as a text or hyperlinks in a HTML doc, open the doc and simply click the links.
*Yes. Best way to solve this is to bake the Mac Mini in a moderately hot oven, basting regularly with sulphuric acid for 2 hours. In fact, this solves all Mac problems, including the most fundamental - it being a Mac.
*No. It will lead you to updating your wardrobe every five minutes, subscribing to GQ magazine, fad diets, compulsory addiction to reality TV and bad techno music, buying overpriced European uncomfortable but modern furniture, moving a studio apartment that costs five grand a week, driving the new VW bugs, and worrying that may be out fashion or unhip. If you were gonna turn into a guy with suspenders and a Linux interest, you would've hewn your machine from raw silicone and gold, put it in a case made from a milkcrate and hooked it up to 19", 8ms LCD and a legendary old IBM keyboard, and written the OS from pure ones and zeroes created by only your fingertips. Meanwhile you would've surfed the net with you other PC running Red Hat and screaming at fellow geeks over which version of Linux is superior, and getting a Jolt Cola IV.

(runs like hell)
