For Anabel:

It's a at least seven year old computer (design-wise). The processor should be fast enough for the basic stuff (mail, internet etc.)
Slightly faster then the G3 Mac my mother uses. There is no info about memory, it should at least be 256 MB and no info about the hard drive (should be at least 4GB.

Not sure if the latest 'Tiger' (Mac OS X 10.4.11) is the best choice because it uses more resources then earlier operating systems like 'Panther' (10.3) or Jaguar (10.2), but is something that needs testing.

50$ is not a bad deal, if aforementioned specs are met, and if you get another year or two of use out of it.

Is this the "lamp" one?

Most important thing to check is how much RAM and HD space it has. Definitely nothing less than 512mb/40gb, although 1gb of RAM is much preferable. Also, you might find 500mhz is pretty painful in terms of processor speed.

Although $50 is hella cheap, you might be better served to see if you can get a 1ghz-ish mini or flat "LCD" iMac for a couple hundred...

Yikes! No, I'd avoid that sucker. We have a couple in here--one is gathering dust on the floor and the other's sole task in life is to show what the Fiery printer is doing.

I think you can do a G3 BUT make sure it's minimum 900 MHz, I think is the cutoff for the useful browsers, OS, etc...this 700 MHz G3 makes my ears bleed, daily, with frustration and rebootings. I have come v close to throwing it out the window more than once.

I would recommend G4 or better, and yeah, as much RAM as you can get.

Here's the "Dell Guy's' opinion:
I suggest a new macbook laptop for $1.1k or imac for $1.2k with warranty.

What do you savvy boys might think on this?

Dell/pc guy's response

I haven't really been keeping up with this thread, but it depends on what your needs are. If you're looking for a simple and portable solution for wordprocessing and the internet, i would not recommend an old mac, but rather a new light and cheap pc laptop.

This sounds like an expensive solution to me. I think US$500-750 is a resonable budget for a computer needed for only casual use.

Anabel, please ignore David Smile

In the fifteen+ years I have used macs I have NEVER had a virus. Not one. Never had a hardware failure. Never had any operating problems. None. That's why I'm telling you to buy one.

Lots of people enjoy digging in the guts of their hardware and knowing the address of every chip and program and how they work. I don't care. Nor do you. Buy a two or three year old iMac or iBook and move on with your life!

You don't really need it new when Apple upgrades models so frequently that people are always getting rid of perfectly good machines just because they aren't the newestlatest.

I suggested an iMac because they all have good sized screens now and come preloaded with everything you need, like the one below:

17" Apple iMac G5 with 2 gigs of RAM and lots of programs for photography, graphics, film and office.

Programs include: Adobe Creative Suite 2 (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat Professional), Soundtrack Pro, Final Cut Pro 5.0 , Final Cut Express HD, Microsoft Office 2004 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Entourage).

Works great. Selling because I don't need it anymore.

But an iBook would be just as good. Just make sure whatever you buy is not more than three years old, max. And you don't have to panic if the one you wanted goes before you get there. There'll always be more listed in a day or two.

Cute little Apple Macbook for sale. Works perfectly, the reason it's so cheap is because it has minor palm rest chipping (see picture) plus I just don't really need it now that school's out. Other than that, it looks and works perfectly. You can buy them new for 1100 + tax or you can buy mine for half the price. : )

If you're looking for a crazy good deal on a macbook, you might not see another for a few months...

Thank you all. It appears that it takes me a lag of time to move on expensive purchases on my behalf, as happened when I was researching car possibilities.
You folks are a treasure.
Very grateful.
