Ah well... In the three or so years i'm using my Dell laptop i've never had any virus or hardware issues either. It runs perfectly, and all this withoutvirus scanners, spyware cleaners or even a firewall. Don't need it... my laptop is protected by common sense. And it goes a very far way. |

As has been noted before, common sense is not very common.

My common sense is like "soul delay"! Which is why I wait to absorb incoming stuff. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nurturing my inner clown. |

I have fixed my TV, and my living room computer.
Got rid of the viruses on my main machine. Retrieved my 1TB external drive after replacement. Yay! _____________________________ Albert's path is a strange and difficult one. |

You wouldn't be a mac user if you used common sense, I guess. I think what Sentinel and Colin are trying to say is only idiots get macs... The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

Actually, I thought David’s advice to be very apt. I could see how a savvy individual could dispense with all the cycle-sapping software currently required as insurance against malware.
Common sense really means avoiding trouble. That includes: 1. Not surfing Russian Pr0n sites for Warz. 2. Immediately deleting emails that smell like Spam. 3. Carefully staying anonymous on-line. 4. Not installing *Free* software 5. Considering the source when receiving any media. I think with clean living like that, you could get through on-line life with only a moderate spyware infestation. |

I can't figure this one out and it makes me feel stupid:
About a month ago, I upgraded to FF3 (whenever it came out) and then, last week, WGB stopped working right in FF. Still works on another system I have with FF3. Still works in IE. So, just not on FF3 on this machine. I've cleared the cookies, changed the permissions, looked around for eve\groupee settings, restarted the browser. No luck. Anybody have any ideas? I just displays real funky, not formated right, graphics in the wrong places. |

To me this sounds like a stylesheet or javascript include file is being blocked from loading somehow.
Do you have AdBlock Plus or something like it enabled? If so, try disabling it and reload. If that works, then you can dig into the offending extension's prefs to figure out what got blocked accidentally. Actually, if you have any extensions enabled, you might just try disabling them all and relaunching to see if it is somehow extension related before you start tinkering. |

I think what Sentinel and Colin are trying to say is only idiots get macs..." I guess I am an idiot. New MacBook incoming on Friday. Digital camera to come, scanner, printer etc. Learning curve up ahead. Working on the house though, which should suck up any funds. Still! An amped MacBook. Whoa, minx, sweet feedback! Thanks!
Dell guy says Apple puts its users in the equivalent of PC Owner Mode, not as an Administrator. Shit as in viruses can't breach and invade. I am amped! There are documentaries, Jon Stewart, videos, music, that I will attend to. With no fucking g-d drama . Enough with the freaking drama, not execution. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nurturing my inner clown. |

You don't even need to be savvy, you just need to not be a complete moron. I don't know why the average computer user has such a problem with that.
6. Make sure that every program you have is set to not automaticly update itself (and this includes your OS). 7. Do not use IE 8. Stay away from 3rd party toolbars, and small pointless tools or games. 9. Never click ads, or download anything you don't know what it is
Last time i bothered scanning it (probably over a year ago), the laptop was perfectly clean. It'd be interesting to see if it still is after all this time. |

David, as a web-designer, I think you know that : - most people are reluctant to install any extra software. And if they do install Firefox, they'll be tricked by the 'default browser' thing next time they launch IE. - third party toolbars are often bundled with perfectly interesting software. In order to avoid them, you have to pay attention during installation, and that usually involves choosing the 'expert mode' instead of the default automated installation. - everybody is bound to click an ad someday. Unless you are already filtering them. Some flash window will somehow appear under your pointer, and you will click. Oh yes, you will. I do believe that for people who don't want to spend time learning how computers work, anything is better than windows. _____________________________ Albert's path is a strange and difficult one. |

You are being unkind. To a great many people, the computer presents and will continue to present an unfamiliar paradigm. Because the cost of entry to computing is very low, and the device has become essential to modern life, a great many of the most cautious and intelligent people will continue to display 'moronic' behavior. |

I'm interested about where the "don't auto-update" rule comes from. I've got pretty much everything set to at least tell me when a new update is available, and I update when it does. The only time I ever had trouble with malware was when I surfed pr0n.*
I agree with the don't use IE, but like Arkan says, most people don't want to install anything like Firefox, that, you know, acts like installing it is important. Of course, they have no problem installing bobble-head commander 12.9 including the yipoo toolbar FREE! But that's because the installer looks like a popup ad. * It was years ago and I learned my lesson. Honest. |

Ah, but I do recall there was one MS-pushed Windows XP update that broke stuff for some people (not me, luckily). It was even in this thread, I think.

Congrats on joining the cult, Anabel. The fact you'll be using an updated system and everything should ease any problems with media you're having now. Still, there might be snags here and there, maybe with .WMV (Windows Movie) files unless you already have some Quicktime plugin installed, but fear not, it's quite painlessly to remedy that.
