The man sat next to me on the Tube this morning looked like Peter Ustinov, dressed in tweeds, with a faint Eastern European accent. He had a ginger and white cat in a travel box on his lap, who he talked to for most of the journey. I couldn't hear the cat's side of the conversation, but I think Peter Ustinov could.

"You can't have any food today. You're going to have your teeth out"
"We're on the bus" (I'm not sure of the point of telling a blatant lie to a cat)
"We must be waiting for a Metro train to go round the curve"
"I don't know why we've stopped. We're past the curve. The Metro train must be stopped at the station in front"
"We're going to Bishopsgate"

I also found it typically London that the guy with a cat got offered a seat but the guy with one leg too few didn't.

Yesterday's oatmeal was reheated in the microwave for breakfast.

Today, the target food is just over half a pound of pinto beans. The intent is refried beans this evening, or maybe tommorrow. The sun is out, and temperatures are going up!

I have a plan for a story. Once the pieces assemble themselves, I will need to take notes, in case I forget before I have the time to sit down and actually write. (Keywords: soap, recycling)

No, my previous sig wasn't really funny.

I've done mostly nada. The second of two days off. Went to the healthfood store and spent my last $4.00 cash on a breakfast burrito. Just cruisin' till payday (tomorrow). Posted another autobiographical blip on "write something now" thread. Think I'll take a shower and do something useful around here.

Withdrew from my linear algebra class at the community college. I graduate this June, then onto the U of Washington in the fall.

I don't know what the fuck I'll major in; they kind of expect you to know by the time you get your associates. I mean, I'd be fine with something like engineering or CS, but I keep screwing myself over like this. Bombing math classes doesn't look good, and these sorts of majors are competitive. ffs... had to take integral calculus five times before I passed it Eek

And, the lin. alg. wasn't even all that hard, compared to come of my other math classes. I'm just a master at squandering time.

Not necessarily today, but this week Mrs. 635 and myself have been selling off a bunch of stuff that's been cluttering up our garage and basement. Post shit on craigslist and things are snapped up within a day, if not within the hour. A clean $150 in the last three days. Sweet! It's like people are paying us for cleaning out our garage!

I highly suggest you fix any time management problems before starting college. The best advice I can give is to buy a day planner and get in the habit of using it religiously. Also, do not major in Computer Science or management/business.

today

i found out my new $10 purple-brown light cord jacket needed a wash before the first wear, because all the jutty out bits on my forearms (veins etc) have picked up the colour.

and i've been detecting, we had this major phone bill here at work because something very big was downloaded over two days in march. first of course i thought of the boss' son, who racked up a $700 bill for a single fight vid download a while ago. but no, i trawled through the log, found it was all out of hours overnight stuff, got the security guys to go through their alarm log. no-one was here at the time.

eventually i worked it out - the guy we get in for the computers here was vague enough before his brain tumor but is now off with the fairies. he drops in now and again and just does stuff without talking it through with us etc. he'd started the download for some backup software and some upgrades the last time he was in and left it to do its business overnight.

good thing he's wiped a couple of hundred off that particular bill, is all i can say.

Usually I think it's a good day if I achieve one thing. Today I've already achieved 2.5, and it's only noon.

First was a (peer) review of a paper for a journal - this one was on teachers' concerns about implementing graphing calculators in their classrooms. I might even lash out and do another couple of reviews today for that really productive feeling.

The 0.5 is because I had been planning to work on a project (for which I was getting pain) to develop an 'issues sheet' canvassing both sides of the issues around biotechnology, genetically modified organisms and food. Just sat down to do it (and to figure out how to make it even-handed despite the biases of those who are paying the bills and calling the shots) when they e-mailed to say 'can it for the time being, something else has blown up and we can't use it'. So, that frees up a few hours, but also some wallet space...

The final one so far was finishing off a book chapter on 'science education for citizenship' that I'd been promising for a while. Sent that off to the group I'm writing the book with.

Still plenty to do - I met with an editor yesterday and will be working on writing a set of new high school (Years 8-10) science textbooks for Queensland schools (actually a bit of a cut-and-paste and supplement job on another set), and they want them quick because there's a new curriculum. I probably have 2 weeks grace while they prepare contracts, then it will be nuts.

In the mean time we just heard that our Expression of Interest for a grant was successful... which means we now get to work our asses off for a month to put in a full application (40-50 pages), and find out if we get the dough in September.

So meh, will be busy enough... but 2.5 things before lunch!

Danke ma'am

Heh, I meant to write 'getting paid' above, but on reflection 'getting pain' is more apposite anyway... good old Sigmund
