Just more white people who have no idea what the symbols they choose mean to others. (but, they'll say, it's just trimmed with lights, it's not actually on fire!). Living in the American South, do you have any idea how many Confederate flags I see on cars every day?

< snort > Never said anything about stupidity *not* being universal. Hydrogen and stupidity, right? And stupidity is more common.

Well, the Rebel flag has meanings other than 'bring back the bellum days when whites owned blacks', and these other meanings are as old as the flag itself: stubborn independence, go your own way, endurance through adversity. The Cross, on the other hand, has always been a symbol of scapegoatism. Jesus died for *you*: isn't He sweet?

Sure, Jesus was a Biblical superhero with great powers. But, for all Superman and Spiderman have been through to keep our streets safe from evil, they never spend three days nailed to a frickin' torture rack to pay our postmortal fare.

Even lynchings last a day at most. So nice of Xtians to maintain the symbol of organized Roman terrorism through the ages for us, eh?

One relatively nice thing about being raised a Mormon rather than most other Xtian denoms is that Mormons don't do crosses. But they were more than happy to talk about the crucifixion, in exquisitely gory detail, from the pulpit. I can still recall Brother So-and-So asking us to imagine the suffering required for a human being to sweat blood: "And His body exuded blood. Eh-XOO-did BLOOD..."

One thing I like about the early (pre-drug-paranoia-criminal-insanity) Huey Newton Black Panthers is that they understood the power of both guns AND symbolism:

Here's another example of symbol changing through context:

I'd say this product is more directly damaging:

They're coming to your town

quote:
Residents of the small Arkansas town of Eureka Springs noticed the homosexual community was growing. But they felt no threat. They went about their business as usual. Then, one day, they woke up to discover that their beloved Eureka Springs, a community which was known far and wide as a center for Christian entertainment--had changed. The City Council had been taken over by a small group of homosexual activists.

The Eureka Springs they knew is gone. It is now a national hub for homosexuals. Eureka Springs is becoming the San Francisco of Arkansas. The story of how this happened is told in the new AFA DVD "They're Coming To Your Town."

One of the first actions of the homosexual controlled City Council was to offer a "registry" where homosexuals could register their unofficial "marriage." City Council member Joyce Zeller said the city will now be promoted, not as a Christian resort, but a city "selling peace, relaxation, history and sex."

Not *history*! And I LOVE that evil encroaching towering wall of rainbow.

Run! They will destroy our stupid!

Thomas Kinkade on How To Make an Utterly Crappy Movie:

quote:

10) Short focal length. In general, I love a focal plane that favors the center of interest, and allows mid-distance and distant areas to remain blurry. Recommend "stopping down" to shorten focal lengths.

11) Hidden spaces. My paintings always feature trails that dissolve into mysterious areas, patches of light that lead the eye around corners, pathways, open gates, etc. The more we can feature these devices to lead the eye into mysterious spaces, the better.

12) Surprise details. Suggest a few "inside references" that are unique to this production. Small details that I can mention in interviews that stimulate second or third viewings -- for example, a "teddy bear mascot" for the movie that appears occasionally in shots. This is a fun process to pursue, and most movies I'm aware of normally have hidden "inside references". In the realm of fine art we refer to this as "second reading, third reading, etc." A still image attracts the viewer with an overall impact, then reveals smaller details upon further study.

13) Mood is supreme. Every decision made as to the visual look of each shot should include the concept of mood. Music can accentuate this, use of edges can accentuate this, atmospheric effects accentuate this, etc.

14) The concept of beauty. I get rid of the "ugly parts" in my paintings. It would be nice to utilize this concept as much as possible. Favor shots that feature older buildings, ramshackle, careworn structures and vehicles, and a general sense of homespun simplicity and reliance on beautiful settings.

There are 16 Pompous Prescriptions, in all.

Or, rather, the FBI understood it: that was a cointelpro coloring book: http://whatreallyhappened.com/RANCHO/POLITICS/COINTELPRO/coloring.html

In fact, I brought this to everyone's attention in 2006. It struck chords in my mind, as I was reading a lot of Chester Himes for my dissertation.

Wow. I thought some of it was over the top.

Thanx for the straighten-out.
