I lived in Kansas City until 5. I remember watching storms all the time from our porch as entertainment. That is when we weren't cowering in the basement when the tornado sirens blew. I still love to watch storms. Here in California we're lucky to get maybe 2 thunder and lightnings in a year. It blows.

Yeah, but you've got that annual Bushfire tradition, just like here.
Maybe it wasn't such a good idea for us to sell you all those eucalypts... The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

Not down here we didn't.
"These things don't burn, do they?" "You signed the cheque yet?" "My assistant should be here any moment with payment." "Then no, mate, not at all. We've also checked all of them for drop bears." "Ah. Thank you." "No worries. Stupid seppoes." "Excuse me?" "Nothing, nothing." The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

All jokes asides, those trees do love a bit of the old ultra-pyro.
Wanna know how the Blue Mountains got its name? It's the thick haze of vapourised eucalyptus oil that permeates the atmosphere. It works on the same principle as an internal combustion engine: vapourised fuel explodes. Whump. That, and the fact they have a tendency to shed leaves and bark like nothing else doesn't help. Now that I am very seriously considering doing my master's work in Geography and learning to work with GIS systems I am having a hard time explaining to people what that means and what it does. Luckily the folks over at GIS.com have a handy powerpoint presentation that explains it pretty well.

Immersion- What do you look like when you're deep inside your video game?

Ugh.. that is epic fail. Its not Immersion, its called "distracted"- big difference IMO. You don't hear about Television Immersion now do you? yet its the exact same feeling, I am being distracted and am enjoying it.. Immersion is when you're literally surrounded by the visuals and sounds VR is great at that. When you see me playing a game I don't look like that at all.. Those people all looked like try hard gamers (you know, the ones with their tongues sticking out while they're mashing the gamepad. Probably on gamespot right now saying how "immersive" fallout 3 was till they encountered the evil bugs that the reviewers forgot to mention- well that's what they'll grow up to be anyway) Maybe I should get a camera and film myself at work, that'd prove my point that you're not really immersed in a game rather you're distracted from the environment around you. Now say if the Enivronment around you were the game.. then yes that would be immersion This message has been edited. Last edited by: Mr_Cyberpunk, |

When referring to video games, immersion is every kind of suspension of disbelief. You don't actually need a full VR rig to suspend disbelief and be absorbed into an artificial world. |

Because just plain ol' turducken wasn't good enough...
Cubemate C and i just spent about 20 minutes browsing through that site. after the cinnamon rolls, brownies, and diet Coke, i can honestly say that if i actually see a piece of bacon today i might vomit. |

I beg to differ. The immersion you're referring to is the Simulated Immersion in that you're assuming things that just aren't physically happening- I can't actually do that with games due to my job desensitizing me to it so its possibly different for non-gamers. What I refer to is TRUE immersion, where you are surrounded and cut off from your environment. That's where the theory falls on its ass because its all mental atm and not physical. |

Same word, different things. Even 'Elite' was mentally immersive because you lived in the world, abstractly represented as it was. Hell, 'Hammurabi' was immersive.

Bravus you've got a point based on that idea of faking/simulating the effects of Immersion, this is why its a joke when companies like Bethesda use it to hype their games up and why it shouldn't be used as a term when talking non-VR video games because I find its misleading as they are talking 2 different things.
Meanwhile.. EPIC RUBBER DUCKY! |
