from Gibsons blog:

quote:

"When I began to write NEUROMANCER, there was no "cyberpunk". THE MATRIX is arguably the ultimate "cyberpunk" artifact..."

Once, my brother and I were discusing if THE MATRIX was "cyberpunk" or not. We dont know who came with the term first or if we had heard it before, but we both agreed that it could be more "labeled" as "cyber-pop".

This was long before MATRIX RELOADED. Now, the teaser posters publishing the fashion on THE MATRIX give us some reasons to think of that label.

That seems almost a fair label, given how much pop-culture is infused with it. But then it's also not a stupid or entirely superficial film, a fact which that label seems to leave out.

I was surprised at Gibson's accolade for The Matrix. As I've said in another post, certain elements of the movie are lifted straight from his universe... but in the end, the main metaphore isn't so much in that vein, and all the action sequences and hollywood clichés truly threatened to turn it into just another gringada. The trailer for the first sequel has gone all the way into oriental fight cinema. Hopefully the eye candy won't eat up the entire movie and leave us with a sour tasting mouth.
BTW, just before I saw the trailer for Tarantino's latest, Kill Bill. Live-action anime? Flying karate fights? Exotic warrioress standing on the edge of a blade? I suppose it's gonna get interesting...

Certain parts of the Matrix are lifted straight out of Plato's universe, too.

fuldog, yeh, Kill Bill looks like it could be pretty sw33t!

kid british, my knowlege of plato is limited to what I read in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance - what parts of the matrix are lifted from plato?

Cheers
