Help me, Geeki-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope...
So I punched my "System Information" button in order to find out if I have enough RAM to run Unreal Tournament, and this is, in part, what I saw: It appears I may have 256MB of RAM. But do I? And where is it? Why do I have only 97.01MB "available"? Is this a transient thing, a snapshot of usage at the time I took the screenshot, or does it mean it's permanently tied-up somewhere? Is some of it, I dunno, burnt-up or sumpin'? |

Which UT, MOM?
Try doing a scan with Ad-Aware and Spybot: Search and Destroy, just to see if you're running anything you didn't know about in the background. Shut down some of them apps in the system tray. Were any other programs running when you hit sysinfo? What OS you running? The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

Not sure which version of the game- my pal's got 'em all. Depends on what my toaster oven here will accept. Might not have a big enough hard drive.
I'm using Windows XP Pro. Had Outlook and maybe Internet Explorer open when I took the screenshot. Been using Start-Up Mechanic, Ad-Aware and Spybot for a while- I try to keep this thing clean and pared down. XP Pro's internal firewall is on, cookies are accepted only on a prompt, and I run every free virus checker known to humanity through this thing on a constant basis. Ad-Aware usually reports 12-15 running processes when I set it off with only my e-mail and one web site open, but I have no idea if that's good or bad for this computer and its software. |

Yeah, just make sure you shut down those apps when you game.
Could try Game XP from Theoretica Software if you're really worried. But UT should scale down nicely. That's the beautiful thing about it's engine. Ah, love that game... The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

I can't get nethack falcon's eye to work on my win2k machine. It used to work, and then I replaced my mobo and it no longer does. I've re-DL-ed and everything. I have saved files... I was a top-level wizard! I had a pet master mind flayer! I was in the elemental levels!
Save me! Remember kids, the internet loves you. Even though sometimes it touches you in the bad place. |

Sigh, you're lucky we geeks are bound by our sacred code to help all those in need.
I've never really played Nethack, never really been a diceroller much - I'm a FPS guy thru and thru. Mobo change shouldn't be that much of a prob. Specially for nethack, as I'm pretty sure that game never needed a 9800xt to run. Google is your friend. Try this URL: http://members.shaw.ca/rob.ellwood/troubleshooting.txt. Ok, further googling led me to good ol' sourceforge. Try: http://sourceforge.net/support/getsupport.php?group_id=29569.
Ok, dirty confession. I have been known to engage in RPG-like activity with my occasional, sordid entries into the worlds of Planescape: Torment and Fallout. *sniff* They will be missed... The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

UT (the original, which is what I assume you mean) should run fine with about 100meg ram free.
Not perfect mind - you'd need 512 for that. _________________________________ Peter Kurt Russell Clarke Gable Windows XP |

Depends on how ya run it. Colour depth, res, audio sample rates. The original would run on way less than a hundred if you scale it down a bit. That's what beautiful 'bout it. It looks sooo god, yet scales nicely. I love it when developers do that.

I'm not much a fan of snipers, allthough it's less a problem in UT then in certain other games.
By the way, anybody here play Soldat? |

So good to see I'm not the only UT addic... er, aficionado frequenting the WGB! If you're on UT2k4, add badgerbadgerbadger to your Buddy List to drop in on a game with me sometime.
I would play more UT99, but the only way that works really well on a Mac is to boot into OS 9. I don't even remember if I have an OS 9 folder specifically set aside for that anymore, so... The UTPG keeps claiming they're going to release a genuine OS X capable version of UT99, but so far nothing. |

Bah, Macs. Nuthin' like a RADEON 9800 and Athlon 64 for runnin' UT.
I loved the classic, if only for the sniper rifle and team-oriented gameplay. It seemed more apparent on the first one. I love it, too, because the maps are small. The sniper rifle was best in the first one. They castrated it for 2k4. Bastards. Soldat...getting round to it. Hell, I'm still playing Deus Ex again. I tend to love the sniper class in Desert Combat, too. The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

And remember, always aim at their feet when using the rocket launcher. That way, even if you miss 'em, rocket should detonate close enough to them to hurt them instead of travelling somewhere harmless. The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

We could probably pull together a UT (would have to be the original game for me) game from people here, by the sound of it, at a timezone appropriate time. I could probably host, although I might have to do some fun NAT tricks with the firewall. Let me get back to you on that...

Whoa... I'd even try and figure out where I put my OS 9 system for that!
Lithos, they're converting a lot of classic maps for 2k4 these days. Some of them even got the size right, like Curses-4. Also, if you're looking for a place with a friendly crowd, you might try Froggers Arcade. And finally, you haven't lived until you've played CBP2-DM-KillBillyBarn. When the UFO flies over the barn, cracks me up every time! |
