Does it strike anyone else as weird that the new remake of War of the Worlds is being directed by Stephen Spielberg, the guy who gave us the cuddly and spritelike aliens of the 80s? The bad news is the flick is set in modern times; but they might - it's hard to tell - have dumped the hokey "Saved by microbes, God's little Martian Zappers!" ending. Actually, probably not - "deus ex machina" is Spielberg's middle name.

I also note in passing that they've filmed a version of Ray Bradbury's dinosaurs-and-time-travel story A Sound of Thunder, directed by Peter Hyams (uh oh). Looks rather awful.

Spielberg? Please! Did you see paid for a ticket to watch Terminal? No, right? NO ONE DID.
"Only as good as your last movie" HA!
About the "Martian Project"- If they set the action in "the present" and change the ending why do they still call it "War of the Worlds"?
Just for Brand Recognition(tm)?
Who cares about the Hollywood crap anymore?
Hero proved that Hollywood can't even make "Hollywood" movies anymore! Notice who crappy AND cheap recent American flicks compared to Asian or European flicks?

You guys know Tom Cruise is in the new WOTW? It's gonna be awesome doods!!! He'll zip up on a motorbike and then jump into the middle of the walking alien cans and bust out a samurai sword coated with alien destroying microbes. Totally Bad Ass!!!! Plus it's got Dakota Fanning, she's so damn cute and alien friendly it makes my eyes bleed.

Seriously though, quit tripping. Can it be any worse than that TV series? And what's with the Only in Theaters Summer 2005? Do they think they're going to start up another mass hysteria campaign, or have they lost all reason and decided to not make a DVD?

In cooler news, there's finally a corporate approved trailer for Sin City

And in the what WTF category: Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy

When's the Firefly movie, Serenity(?) coming out? Also, I was just thinking, good thing David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson bailed on X-files, it was really holding back their movie careers. (True, the series had kinda played out...)

Wow! hadn't seen the new Sin City trailer. If the film lives up to the trailer it looks like it will be one of the best comic to screen adaptations I've seen. Some of the shots in the trailer are straight out of the comic books.

Serenity is now scheduled for release in September. Was s'posed to be in April, but apparently there was a lot of competition in April and they didn't think it would get the notice it deserved...

I saw the Battlestar Galactica Mini Series and am very stoked for the new series starting next week here in Canada on Space:The Imagination Station.

Hitchhiker's is either gonna be really good or really bad. No middle ground on this one.

Sin City will be fantastic.

X-Files needs a replacement soon. I miss the wierdness and the conspiracies.

Unleashed This one has been going by the moniker DANNY THE DOG. That's right, it's the new Jet Li movie, also starring Morgan Freeman and Bob Hoskins. I guess the marketing droids figured people willing to spend 10 bucks on a movie ticket are too stupid to associate a title that sounds like the name of a Sesame St. character with the latest French martial arts flick, so they changed it to sound like a bad straight to video urban entertainment joint instead. That or CRAZY MAN RAISED AS DOG WHO KILL YOU HARD was too big to fit on the posters.

Have you seen the long promo thing for Sin City?

Sweet merciful Jesus, it looks cooler than I thought possible. I heard a rumor that Robert Rodriguez had to resign from the director's guild or some such so that he could share credit with Frank Miller.

It's unbelievable.

DARK WATERAmerican remake of the Japanese film directed by Hideo Nakata. He gets a writing credit at least, but since he was busy directing the American version of his own Ring 2 (so, he's done what, 3 or 4 Ring productions now?) they handed directing duties to Walter Salles, whose most recent movie I had heard of was Motorcycle Diaries, the feel good movie about socialist warrior Che Gueverra before he went all socialist and warrior. I don't know if they can match the tone of the original, but damn, Jennifer Connely is hot, and there's got to be a lot of scenes of her in clingy soaking wet garments if it's anything like the original, which would definitely get my dollars.

Indeed I have. I was reading this thing with RR where he said they thought they might just go ahead and direct a ton of the shorter stories to include as bonus segments on a DVD release. Please God, please, make it so. I think this might be the movie that marks the turning point in the professional use of high definition digital video as a viable capture medium for high budget productions. The thing with the Director's Guild is, you can't be a member and co-direct something with a nonmember, or some other such bullshit:
quote:
The project has ruffled some feathers with the Directors Guild of America (DGA) because Rodriguez wanted to share directing credit with comic-book creator Frank Miller, which - unbeknownst to him – is against DGA’s rules.

If you've ever seen the inside of RR's garage (which sort of resembles Mission Control - Houston back in the Appollo launch days) as shown in the extras on the Once Upon a Time in Mexico DVD, I seriously doubt he even needs Hollywood anymore, just some lunch money and actors.

Sadly, I can't remember a damn thing in particular about the series, just watching a marathon of it on a small fuzzy tv up in the guest room at my grandparents house while huddled in front of a space heater and fiddling the antennae. Oh and there did seem to be a lot of chain link fence on the show.
