But Darren Aronofsky directing from a David Self (Road to Perdition, which was damn fine moviemaking) script could work rather well. It seems to point toward the fucked-up-ness necessary for a successful reboot.

I thought the originals were comedic in a Cronenberg way. The premise is ridiculous, so I think that any cheek this movie has to offer must contain a tongue.

The original still stands up nicely. The sequel was ma ma.

I still will probably kill myself if they remake Cool Hand Luke.

Ridiculous as opposed to what? We (you and I) are fans of SF and comics. We can forgive the ridiculous easily.

That said, I hope this Robocop remake allows Aronofsky to show off a sense of humor (there's a bit of it there in Requiem for a Dream, but it's coal-black).

Robocop was a violent farce. A dirty joke, a slap in the face that showed you an unpleasant possibility. The sequel had some moments but deflated under its' inability to decide where to go, satire or flashy monsters. And the third was pure crap.
What can they do to it? Batman-bleak it? Would they go all the way, then? It would be a bloodbath, if they really went and make it a serious film. Turn it into another Hero film, clean armature lines, PC-approved plot? Don't we have too many of those already?

"Dirty joke" is an excellent description, I think. I vote for bloodbath. An unblinking look at what could happen to us if we kicked current trends up a few notches. The alternative is what: Robocop does community policing? Why bother?

We don't need a new RoboCop and certainly not a reinvention. Besides, the fucking RoboCop was already supposed to be here by 2010. He's too fucking late.

It was a purely 80's zeitgeist they channeled, I don't see what would work now. Times Square is Disneyland, Detroit may still be a shithole but no one seems to care. he'd be better off with water wings in New Orleans.

This is a bad idea for a reboot.

I'd watch an Ed 209 in Baghdad though.
