Top ten dystopian novels... according to Robert Collins.

William Gibson has a entry, but it's probably not the novel of his you might expect to be on this list.

quote:
"Fictional dystopias are almost always cautionary tales - warnings of where our political, cultural and social surroundings are taking us. The novels here all share common motifs: designer drugs, mass entertainment, brutality, technology, the suppression of the individual by an all-powerful state - classic preoccupations of dystopian fiction. These novels picture the worst because, as Swift demonstrated in his original cautionary tale, Gulliver's Travels, re-inventing the present is sometimes the only way to see how bad things already are."

I don't think Gibson's books are really dystopian... Maybe just a little bit.

You're right. WG attracts dystopian readers.

Idoru is one of the closest to our actual reality, that is why it seems so dystopian. We recoil in self-defense.

My own list might be something like this:

1984

The Road

On the Beach

Never Let Me Go

Empire of the Sun

Gravity's Rainbow

Brave New World

A Scanner Darkly

The Plague

The Castle

Also, this makes me think of a bunch of Aussies, Mad Maxed out around the thigh bones of Kangaroos and untinned dog food reader over the great western cannon with blonde, big haired muscle women fawning over them as a mushroom cloud rises against the slim line of the horizon.

Yeah, and I wonder who'll be responsible for that mushroom cloud?

Or Dhalgren, though both are admittedly not very well known. Idoru? Huh?

I still have to read that book. I started it and liked it but had to return it to the library and never got it again.

Those left Behind books are dystopian too and anything by Ann Coulter or Bill O'reilly scares the shit out of me as well.

The wild success of Mitch Albom is rather proof to me that I'm living in a dystopia too.

Fahrenheit 451: I would have thought this would make the cut for even a short list.

From the Ballard works, my pick would have been High Rise.

Walter Tevis' Mockingbird, while not known as widely as Brave New World and 1984, has the same tone and concepts and is equally good.

Surprised the recent The Road (2006) by Cormac McCarthy has not been mentioned.

I would've thought All Tomorrow's Parties or Count Zero or maybe even Mona Lisa Overdrive would've been better Gibson entries for this list than Idoru.

Some others...

Atlas Shrugged

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Logan's Run

Shockwave Rider
