Okay, the footage is handheld but...
I am just a little bit excited about this TR2N And yes, I am old enough to remember the first one. This message has been edited. Last edited by: titanium wren, -------------------------- A titanium wren never sings. |

I'm just finding the sheer number of sequels being made at the moment slightly over whelming, and well, un-needed..

What's even funnier is that most of the CGI were, in fact, optical effects. The computer firepower to generate those kind of images was beyond the reach of the film-makers. I heard somewhere that there is only about fourteen minutes of actual CGI in the entire film. -------------------------- A titanium wren never sings. |

A lightcycle approaches a lone figure who is just a dot, cybermiles down the light track. But with the speed of the cycle, it only takes seconds to drone past with it's theater-speaker-busting sub-frequencies.
The figure rises, turns. Only then do we see his face. "Hey, careful, man, there's a beverage here!" |

Tron was awesome! I'm glad they're making a new version of this actually... these days they'll be able to do the graphics much better.
Btw Wren, did you play the Tron 2 computer game that came out a few years ago? Its multiplayer light disc arenas were a lot of fun! |

Never did play any version of Tron on computer.
But I've been a sucker for vector graphics since the early days. My screen saver is a vector-green planet earth, rotating slowly War Games style. My favourite arcade is the original sit-down cabinet version of Star Wars. What can I say... I guess I'm old-school. -------------------------- A titanium wren never sings. |

I'm an old school Tron fan as well. I am concerned about the sequel however. They so often screw up cool things from my childhood these days... Star Wars, Transformers, etc.

Yeah, I was sooooo wanting to love the new Star Wars....
Guess I really am the classical type after all. Haven't seen Transformers yet but I'm not too concerned. I mean, it was just a frikkin' cartoon. -------------------------- A titanium wren never sings. |

Hey at least the Batman Returns / Dark Knight movies give us hope that it's possible to revisit a good movie without screwing it up!

Christopher Nolan is a frikkin master. Last year my stepfather was in town and exploring a graveyard near Fulham Stadium. He saw an elderly lady working in the info booth and stopped to ask some questions. They got to talking and, as you do, chatted about family. He asked about her children, "Oh, my son makes films." "What's his name?" "Christopher Nolan" Unreal -------------------------- A titanium wren never sings. |

If there's a sequel to Tron on the horizon, then my world just got a little bit brighter. I *loved* the first film - I saw it at the Odeon Leicester Square in 70mm when it came out back in, what - 1982?
For me, Tron was the most geek-intensive film in the history of motion pictures; TW is right about the non-CGIness of much of the film. All the live-action stuff inside the computer was filmed in black and white, and then each frame of stock was printed on to large sheets of paper and shipped to Korea where it was hand-painted. Then the whole thing was photographed back on to film as if it was stop-motion animation. Just how delightfully insane a process is that? Oh, and Jean "Moebius" Giraud designed the costumes, too. Marvellous stuff. When is this one coming out? IMDB suggest it's some time in 2011, which is too damn far away... best, Chris H |

Amen to that! I had a Battlezone arcade game for a while in the 80s. Bought it used from Bally in Chicago. I shoulda never sold it. That said, FUCK REMAKES! As if there aren't a million original screenplays sitting around out there waiting to be made into films. What Hollywood does is take a classic film, because that film was successful in some way, and remake it because they think it's a sure thing financially. Can you name one of these that was as good as the original? 'Course, the problem is, aesthetics change. Many younger people actually will prefer the newer version, despite the poor writing that is typical of remakes. I blame MTV. Hell, I blame TV in general. Bah! Remakes. I want to see Eon made into a film. Dhalgren. The Forever War. Axis of Time trilogy. And hundreds of other films NOT based on novels, or comic books, or TV shows. This message has been edited. Deadly Disks for Atari 2600 was pretty great.
Is this a sequel or a remake? A sequel I wouldn't mind, I suppose. |

My, but they could fuck that up. I'd still love to see it. Watchmen looks cool. As far as I'm concerned, I prefer silent vice to ostentatious virtue. -Albert Einstein |

I wonder what kind of story TR2N offers.
The original ended fairly abruptly. Bridges defeats the MCP and Dillinger's theft of his work is revealed. Bridges becomes CEO of ENCOM and the credits roll. This all seems to happen in the space of five minutes. So now, twenty plus years later. Is Bridges still CEO? Does the MCP still exist in some form or another? What other characters come into play? To be honest, I'm not that concerned. Tron was all about trying something new with visual effects. Even if TR2N is a re-tread with better visuals, it's still going to frikking rock! I agree with whoever said the sound of the light-cycles is cool. Second only to the Milleniun Falcon. Christ, I really am a SF geek. -------------------------- A titanium wren never sings. |

Har! Man, I loved that film. It made me into a total arcade junkie for years. I would be more excited about this but the lightcycles have been ruined. They were cool because they were made of light and handled unlike motorbikes, but like conceptual bike-like objects that turned instantly at 90 degrees. And if you crossed paths: game over! THEY DIDN'T NEED REDESIGNING!! |
