As in the Neal Stephenson book? I quite liked that. I'm spending the start of July re-reading Neuromancer (which for me is the literary equivalent of a big woolly blanket just out of the tumble drier). If it's a quiet working weekend, I'll probably start China Mieville's The Scar. ---------------------------------- "A million monkeys were given a million typewriters; it's called the internet" Simon Munnary |

If you're not a fan of baroque language, don't let the first few chapters put you off. The pacing gets better and the language more direct as it goes on. On the other hand, if you like the first few chapters, savor them, but don't worry. The chitinous descriptions, slavered in layer upon layer of oozing secretions, never completely go away. |

Started this on my lunch break.

Rats, is Dance Dance Dance the next one? I brought Hard-Boiled Wonderland as it seemed to be the next chronologically. Sigh. Uber, you and Black Jacques ought to start a dictatorial travel agency, and tell people what they should be doing rather than what they wish to do while they're on vacation <_< _____________________________________ ::swoon:: |

In London my two favorite bookstores are Hatchard's (Piccadilly) and Foyles (Charing Cross). You can't fail to find something to read in either of them. Don't miss upstairs at Harvey Nick's for lunch. |

I will bear that in mind next time I'm in London. I've eaten at HN before, actually. I go there to stock up on my perfume, which can be hard to find in Canada. _____________________________________ ::swoon:: |

All the more reason to get out and see the foreign territory! Was the a gremlin on the wing? Were you sat next to The Shat? Or John Lithgow? |

it may well be the next chronologically, but DDD is the "sequel". you can read it alone anyway, it was the first of his i read - partly because of cool cover, cool description, and the bruce sterling quote. though i'm sure the last UK edition i saw was WSC/DDD as one book. |

I gotta get one too...
I finished "A Portrait of the Author as a Young Man" last night. I love that book. The ending, before Stephen really knows where he'll go, but only that he'll be doing it on his own terms....just so good. Anyway, started "The Names" by Don DeLillo. Amazon.com was also out of stock. I canceled my order and switched to the Book Depository. Hope to be reading in 7-10 days! |

DeLillo has a sweet turn of phrase while writing, but his "plot" in that book drove me absolutely bonkers with annoyance. Too much message for my taste, IIRC. (Which I may not--it's been like 10 years since I read it.) |

He's always kinda light on plot. I tend to like authors that do this.(I absolutely loved "White Noise") I am enjoying "The Names", but am only on page 23.

Bruce Sterling’s “Islands in the Net”. I’ve tried to read this book twice now, but have never got beyond the first 100 pages. Something else has always happened in real life, so to speak. It’s the kind of book I normally really like. It’s just that I’ve read “Neuromancer” way too much, and that probably doesn’t help. I’ll get through the book this time. |
