Last year as part of my PhD, I wrote a paper on art direction, architecture and world building in SF. I used a Sight & Sound article (Brit film magazine) that had an interview with WG about good art direction (or good moments) in bad SF movies as the anchor for my paper.

In reference to a few different threads at the moment, you might want to check out a few of these books and articles:

"Cloning The Future: Science Fiction Film 1895-1996", Sight and Sound supplement, p. 22, November, 1996. - good interview/article with WG about good/bad moments in SF film - and includes a special shout out to Molly Ringwald!

"Film Architecture: Set Design From Metropolis to Blade Runner" by Deitrich Neumann, Prestel, Munich, 1996. - This is a fascinating look at how movies influenced architecture and vice a versa. Has a good chapter on Blade Runner.

"Sets In Motion: Art Direction and Film Narrative" by Charles Affron and Mirella Affron, Rutgers University Press, 1995 - this is a fairly "high brow" academic examination of what art direction tells us about the narritive worlds of SF.

(I posted something similar on another thread in the "NEUROMANCER.." section)

The Bear> What else would you suggest for schi-fi literary criticism?
