Was perusing though Mr. Gibson's blog, and came across a particular passage that struck me as quite poetic.
The nugget, from 1/12/03, on the passing of Tim Leary:

"His very last call consisted of him inviting me to his wake, and assuring me that I'd be "on the A-list". I told him I'd be there, though I knew I wouldn't. I had an abscessed tooth, was scheduled for a root canal, and, besides, I knew he wasn't going to be there. He wouldn't miss me, and I didn't want to go all the way down there just to miss him even more."

It got me thinking, if something is poetic, does that make it poetry? Or, are a few, well-written sentences that inspire thought and nostalgia just that, a few sentences? An argument could be made either way I suppose. For me, it's filled with thought-provoking ideas, from the surreal of someone inviting you to their own wake, a wake having an "A list," the lying for good, and a dental procedure used as a bridge to pre-mourning (and plain mourning).
So, whether it's poetry or not is, of course, subjective--either way I'd like to read more of this style if it exists out there (though I suppose stumbling upon it is more satisfying, and isn't that we're always doing, mining for accidental poetry?)

PS--I posed this to a friend who has her MFA in Poetry. I'll post her thoughts if this thread proves to be at all interesting.

beauty, and often art, lie in the eye of the beholder.

As far as I'm concerned, I prefer silent vice to ostentatious virtue.
