Anyone noticed how huge SONY is becoming? I mean this bad boy has its hands on almost everything electronic wize. Your PC'S, TV'S,Phones, and even your copy of Spiderman and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon...the list just goes on! And now they got this new piece of bad ass technology thats coming out, Called "The Cell" or "The Grid" Supposed to be able to carry out trillions of calculations per second, Your gonna be able to do stuff like video conference with a friend, watch a movie and microwave a day old pizza on the same device (I kid you not). They say its the future of computing, the technology is also going to be in their next gen console (PS3).
They even got their hands in robotics, They have them creepy robotic dogs called Aibo that simulate characteristics of real dogs. And now they got this kinda humanoid robot called the Qrio robot that can jog at top speed of 14 metres per minute. Am I just a paranoid Nigerian or is SONY evolving to Sensenet or even creepier in a kewl way SKYNET ? |

And here's me thinking anime was the peak of Japanese evil.

Is Sony a corporation on its own, or is it a part of a larger super-Zaibatsu conglomeration of corporations? I seem to remember that most Japanese consumer brands are actually owned by one or two super-companies.

My take is that there's a tension - the technologies actually tend to evolve in directions that lead to decentralisation and information anarchy, and the zaibatsus (including the American and European ones) try to retain hierarchy and centralisation and privilege. We seem to have managed to hang in the dynamic tension for quite a while now (at least since WW2), but I suspect that one or the other tendency will gain the ascendancy, at least temporarily, before too long. Personally, I'm rooting for the tech[1].

I think you ARE being paranoid Nwazo. Sony is completely normal. Sony's motive are completely innocent and benign. Sony just wants to be your friend, that's all. As your friend, Sony wants to make sure you have really neat toys to play with. You like neat toys don't you?
C'mon, buy a PSP! Buy a PS3! I'm sure you could use a new Sony Wega TV and a new Sony Walkman CD player so you can watch Spiderman and listen to the new Jessica Simpson Christmas album. Wouldn't the WGB load so much faster on a new VIAO computer? You know it would. So stop worrying about Sony, and let Sony worry about making your like safe convenient and most of all, fun! |

Yes SONY is acting perfectly normally, given that it is a corporation and therefore its motive is to make mountains and mountains of cash by whatever means possible.
On the other hand SONY is so large now that some branches of it end up competing quite vigourously with other branches of it from time to time, which I find somehow encouraging. This message has been edited. Last edited by: colin, |

quote: North American, eh? Then perhaps I can interest you in a Stinger missile system. Or some anthrax. Relaaaaxx about the PS3's cell processor. Take away 90 percent of the marketing bullshit and you'll find that it's not gonna be any better or worse than other processors when it's released. In fact, that goes for all there products. It's not gonna eat your children. It won't steal you newspapers. It won't pass on your bank account details to Nigerian Princes who desperately need to get some money out of the country, fast. And if you need more help in keeping the black, Aibo-piloted helicopters at bay, remember that Sony isn't being built by Sony. It's being done by done by IBM, who're also doing Nintendo's and Microsoft's next-gen console CPU's. If you still need further verbal valium, here's a geek maxim: anything made by sony is reverse-engineered and built in Taiwan in six months. The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

But we gotta keep a watchful eye people!

The nonsense that is Sony:
A couple of years ago I had a penchant for a portable music player - something that would let me play all the music I had ripped to my PC, etc. At that time, flash memory players were reasonably cheap but quite lacking in memory. Hard disk players were better, but too expensive, and a little too fragile. I figured minidisk would be a good compromise - transfer MP3s to minidisk, like the minidisk was flash memory, quick and easy. Oh no. The software had probably the worst user interface I have seen (I have seen a lot from development boards, *nix and Edinburgh bus time tables), and the added pain of having to convert everything to another format first, so you couldn't just easily add a track to a compilation (and really, that's what its all about). And add a dash of ad hoc DRM, it turned out to be a real waste of time. I bought 10 blank minidisks, have used 4. It's all about control. Sony products are generally well designed - my minidisk player still looks good, it's taken bashes but survived well, it sounds good, but...it is just not easy to use in the way one would like, certainly not without jumping through Sony's hoops - "use our equipment", is the message, "you will get the tech, the look, but remember, it will our boot on your face, forever." ------------------------------- ...fluid leaking from my brakes. |
