Reactions to the Gobernator from several scifi writers, on Eileen Gunn's Infinite Matrix webzine:

quote:
William Gibson

I forget whether, in the Virtual Light books, Arnold is president of the US or merely Governor of SoCal, but, hey, it looks like I've gone and been prescient again. I hate it when that happens.

Ahhhh, a new Gibson quote. Almost like having the blog back.

If I recall correctly the book is very vague about this in typical Gibsonesque fashion. I think it just says Mr.S "went into politics."

And that still leaves splitting California in two. Which end will be seceding first, do we think?

NoCal will.

BTW I was eating at my favorite teppanyaki place at lunch and saw a picture on the wall that seemed very familiar. It took me a couple of minutes before I realized it was the avatar I use. Except about 20 times larger and on silk. I chuckled and then finished eating my shrimp and squid combo plate.

If I recall, Schwarzenegger has talked about going into politics (at some point) since his Pumping Iron days. Not that too many people took him seriously at the time. And yet Gibson did, I wonder what he noticed about Arnold that made him take the idea seriously. Wink

For me, that's one of the great things about Gibson. His futures are so plausible/believable. For instance: when I read that part about Arnie going into politics, my first reaction was: yeah, I can imagine him doing that one day. A lot of the other Scifi writers don't have that. I recently read Stephenson's Snowcrash and I found it an amusing, yet totally implausible future.

if you lived in Southern California. ;^)

As for who screwed up the fabric of reality; this election, like almost all I have voted in, went opposite of the way I voted, which over the years has left me feeling like I'm living in a reality not of my own making.

Now as for Who Screwed Up the Perception of Reality? -- This election, like the last Presidential election, had the headlines blaring, 'LANDSLIDE!', which sickens me. I'm sorry, 56% to 44% is not a fucken landslide. When someone gets 80% of the vote, now *that's* a landslide, hell, I'll even give you 70%, shoot, go for 65%. But not 50 something to 40 something percent. Bloody hell. *sigh*

Yeah, I guess you're right. Where I live, any kind of future seems implausible... Frown

But I never really understood the split between North and South California in the Bridge series. Is that likely to happen? Why? Because of political differences? Cultural? Can someone explain?

If that's not enough, they're naming a mountain after him.

Someone is clearly messing with reality. That's for sure.

We should split north and south, but name them East and West California, to keep the rest of the country on it's toes; which is really the reason Arnold got elected.
