Midnight Boom (2008) by The Kills

Alt Rock. I like it! I really liked Keep on Your Mean Side; didn't like No Wow. This album is more like the former, and less like the latter. It does not hurt that duets are my fave performance combo. I also like spare compositions. This album also reminds me a lot of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah's recent stuff, although better produced.

Best Track: "Alphabet Pony"

The Gordon album by the Barenaked Ladies is possibly my favourite album of music. I know every word to every song and have listened to it endlessly since I was about 12.
i had to go buy a new copy of the CD as i think i wore my dad's original copy out in 2006 or so...
Anyway, here is a short Green~Robot Review of each song on the Gordon album (Barenaked Ladies, 1992)

"Hello City" (Page, Robertson) – 3:22
A song about boredom, I've always felt. And hating the city, something I've always identified with.
"Enid" (Page, Robertson) – 4:07
First crushes/relationships are always difficult to reminisce about, and I think this song hits that nerve. I listened to this song a million times after my first boyfriend and I broke up!
"Grade 9" (Creeggan, Creeggan, Page, Robertson, Stewart) – 2:53
I love this song... I drove my best friend crazy playing it the year he was in Grade Nine! The song captures the feeling of awkwardness felt by every kid during the first weeks of school (or starting a new job...)
"Brian Wilson" (Page) – 4:47
The description of the dream in this song has made me shudder every time I've heard it.
"Be My Yoko Ono" (Page, Robertson) – 2:45
Cute and fun, with sly jabs at The Beatles and Yoko (obviously).
"Wrap Your Arms Around Me" (Creeggan, Page, Robertson) – 4:35
Beautiful. A gorgeous song about relationships.
"What a Good Boy" (Page, Robertson) – 3:52
Everyone, I think, has that feeling at the beginning of a relationship that maybe they've gone out of their minds and made a wrong desicion. This song is like, okay whatever maybe this is crazy but what the hell. I like you. Be with me tonight.
"The King of Bedside Manor" (Page, Robertson) – 2:24
Goofy crazy sillyness that cracks me every time.
"Box Set" (Page) – 4:48
A narrative of the rise and fall of a pop-star, told as if he is talking about his new Box Set to a fan or romantic partner. Clever, indeed.
"I Love You" (Creeggan, Creeggan, Page, Robertson) – 4:08
People are selfish even when they don't think they are... This song is so amazingly fun to sing along with.
"New Kid (On the Block)" (Dibble, Page, Robertson) – 4:12
Right here, this song, is why I don't like boybands!
"Blame It on Me" (Page, Robertson) – 3:54
Being in a relationship takes work...
"The Flag" (Page) – 3:53
A glimpse into another side of relationships. Heartbreaking and beautiful.
"If I Had $1000000" (Page, Robertson) – 4:27 "Crazy" (Robertson, Wilson) – 4:08
Classic BNL. 'Nuff said.
Smile

Spirit Of The Glen (2008) by The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards

*Real* Celtic. I did not like the orchestrated bits, but the pure pipes tracks were actually quiet relaxing. Like listening to harpsichord music.

Best Track: "Caledonia"

At Home (1999) by Cherish The Ladies

Celtic. Nothing special. I think I like the more nouvo-Celtic female vocals with ethereal Gothic overtones.

Best Track: "Reels: The Nightbird/Mystery's Dance"

Some fairly fresh hip hoppish goodness. Along the lines of MIA, but I like her a bit more, musician-wise. Good stuff, solid album.

It's funny you mention MIA- I've been listening to "Paper Planes" over and over and over. It may be my anthem of the summer.

Maybe.

The sword (I bought all three of their albums) quite good I think, reminds me alot of dragon force. First new cd I've liked out of the last few I've picked up recently

Asleep in the Back [Bonus Track] (2002) by Elbow

Rock. Souds a bit like Catherine Wheel to me. Mates think there's Radiohead lurking in the tracks. Not really dance, but electronica anyway.

Best Track: "Any Day Now"

Goldfrapp Seventh Tree
It has already been mentioned in december and april.
Usually I am not a bg fan of Goldfrapp but i really dig this one.
And their website is worth looking at with its footage-like full screen video.

Hey Green-Robot, here's something that really is creepy. Your favorite singer, Steven Page, is BUSTED.

I really didn'nt like it. I think I only listened to it once. Its 'acoustic Goldfrapp', which goes against the electronica grain in many ways.

Cast of Thousands [ENHANCED] (2004) by Elbow

Alt Rock. I'm liking Elbow. The more I listen to Elbow, the more I think of Gomez. The sonics can be a
bit dippy at times, but thats OK.

Best Track: "Fallen Angel"

Picture Book (1990) by Simply Red

R&B. I'm a fan of Durutti Column. If you like them, then you like Simply Red. However, its not
what I ususally listen to.

Best Track: "Money$ Too Tight ( To Mention)"

Someone Else's Party (2003) by Durutti Column

Alt Rock. I was in the mood for some guitar, but not any Clapton. Been a Durutti Column fan for awhile. Hard to imagine they have music going back to the 80's. This is
one of my fave of their recent albums. (I've owned it for awhile.)

Best Track: "Somebody's Party"

(*almost* a hotdog-worthy album title! Actually, despite the darkly evil lyrics, the album is named for Ihsahn's youngest child)

Well worth a listen

Thanks B-, I'll check that oot.

Meanwhile, back in the States...I picked up JaConfetti's "The Rainbow Express" and love them to pieces.

I really like these girls. A great debut with substance in a genre defined by fluff.

I have finished listening to Belle & Sebastian's Discography. Well worth enduring some tediously repetitive songs, they have the very rare talent of making cohesive whole albums that flow song by song from start to finish. A mostly lost art these days of MP3 Singles.
If you are interested in reproducing my experiment search Google or torrent sites with keywords like Belle & Sebastian, complete discography, all or total albums/songs. I found a complete collection using this search combination on ThePirateBay.org
It's worth the research time to get payed back with beautifully cohesive albums and live concerts.
Cheers and Enjoy!

Been listening to the new Beck album, Modern Guilt and I'm loving it. Dangermouse's production really adds something different.

Also the Hold Steady's new album Stay Positive is good. A couple of songs I could do without, but by and large some really good stuff. Also, is that a harpsichord I hear?

The new Girl Talk album, Feed the Animals, is just plan fun for a music nerd. You could really just throw this on at a party and let it spin and everyone would be happy.
