Thanks, that's interesting. I'm not sure which battery Australian 900s get. Still, if I want to spend a couch-bound evening online I could always plug it into the nearest wall socket. [Edit: looks like we get the 5800mAh battery.]
The specs for the 901 suggest a greatly-improved battery life. Supposedly 7.8 hours, but I bet that's under lab conditions with the thing turned on but not actually doing anything! The 901's screen is no bigger than the 900's, interestingly. I still think I'll wait a month or two and see how much 900s cost then. I reckon the price will fall a bit. ----------------------------- "It may be said with rough accuracy that there are three stages in the life of a strong people. Well I managed to wait 17 days. Picked up my Eee today, and I think it´s going to be damn handy.

My husband ordered one - but we won't be getting it until mid-July. We need our crazy Danish vowels on the keyboard.

Eee PC 1000 Review
The intro 700-series makes way for a full blown net PC. Also, 'White is never the new black.'. |

I'm delighted with my Linux 900.
It's too small to be a true laptop replacement in my view - I couldn't see anyone producing their thesis on one and staying sane - but as a portable internet device it's superb. ----------------------------- "It may be said with rough accuracy that there are three stages in the life of a strong people. Am gonna get me a 1000H, methinks.
Gonna get it with Windows, because according to Asus' comparison table, the battery lasts longer under XP. The battery's a 6600mAH version. Sure, it weighs a keg and a half, but I don't wanna be typing on something with the screen the size of a business card. It's got a 254mm screen, so that's pretty good. HDD, not SDD. Weighs a keg and a half, but I've got a damn good backpack. The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

I don't know. I think part of the sex appeal of the Eee is the Solid State (hard) Drive (SSD).
I'd be tempted to get a PC 1000 and then do a stripped-down XP install onto the 40GB SSD. If I was going to just get a conventional hard drive, I'd look at the other Netbooks that are out there. |

Actually, you reminded me of a question I need to ask.
I've a (faithful) copy of XP here (yes, it's actually legit), but I want to know if it's possible to actually install Windows over the Linux version, and be able to obtain the correct drivers for it. That's the problem I had with a no-OS Acer laptop I got from Indonesian, that great archipelago to the north. The drivers wouldn't load, not even after I'd upgraded to SP2, installed the new Windows Installer, .NET architecture and Java. "Fuck off," the drivers would say to me. "Your computer does not meet the requirements," they would continue. I'm wondering if Asus uses those god-forsaken custom Windows installs, that have useless crap welded to the very fundamentals of the OS's functionality. Basically - is it possible to loaded XP on it yourself, then head over to the Asus site and download drivers? Or is it a case of "lose the 'recovery disk' and you're fucked, sonny Jim"? The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

Yes. Do a Search. Asus actually has the drivers on their support site. Be warned, the site is overused, and infuriating to page through. However, once a download is started, its good. I typically choose a server on the other side of the planet from me to start a download from. |
