I need a sticker for mine. I freaked out a girl in the local computer store, when she saw mine she was *almost* sure I'd snuck in the back and taken hers.
It does rock. I'm listening to streaming internet radio (somafm) right now. ------------------------------------ Honestly, I can't think of a sig... ------------------------------- |

From what I've seen last night of MOM's Eee, the desktop is more like MacOS than anything else, really far from the clunky Unixes of old. I find it the perfect candidate for a second laptop, mainly for web browsing, e-mailing, chatting (there's a webcam above the screen), and picture/video/youtube viewing. The limited storage capacity means that you can't use it to dump all your SD cards for a week's vacation or more, but you can probably use an external USB drive (provided the Eee delivers enough to power the drive). |

True... it looks very user friendly for the standard tasks. But to install for instance a working webserver and PHP on it, it'd probably need to start dicking arround command line style.

I kind of understand why they used a flash memory rather then a conventional harddriver. Everybody who used to own a hard disk iPod and used it on the move will be able to tell you why. However, if the thing would just have an PCMCIA (or Compact Flash) slot ... one could, you know, choose how much and what kind of memory they want to slot in. But beside that ... I really ... REALLY like that thing. I know plenty of people who really don't need anything else. The only thing that stops me from buying one is the fact that I really don't need one. ___________________________________________________________ "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." See, now I don't want one. I did yesterday, but I'm just a contrary prick.
Actually, is it good enough to run Photoshop? The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

There isn't a photoshop version for 'nix based system, so you'd be stuck with *shrudder* the Gimp. Besides, would you really want to run photoshop on a screen that tiny?
The only use i see for it for myself is for programming during comutes etc, and using it as internet machine when traveling. |

True.
If they could make it even cheaper - and I'm talking cutting back on HDD space, processor power, RAM, it would make an awesome wardriver - and, yes, a simply flash memory slot would be grand. Hell, they have those things on phones, right? The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

NB: Apparently, they can run XP.

Okay, it is around 3 to 4 times as expensive as the Eee ...
... but I am compleatly bolwn away by the HTC Shift. What they where able to fit into this small case is boardering on witchcraft! Just to give one simple example; the same 400MHz Qualcomm MSM 7200 Processore that is powering the entire iPhone is used in the Shift as a tertiary processor, solitary to guarantee the real time operation of tasks like Video Phone or GPS, while the main processors are free to executing applications. ___________________________________________________________ "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." I know this is the wrong season to ask this, but how is the screen in outdoor daylight conditions?

Well... you can get quite large and inexpensive PCMCIA hard drives. SD cards ... not so. At least not for strorage above 20Gigs. I really love that little thing and it is well suited for lots of things. But the fact that you can not put some half decent internal memory into it, is heavily limiting its potential abilities. Of course, external memory is a possibilities, but one that impacts mobility. ___________________________________________________________ "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." I would never need 20gig on this thing! That's what my normal laptop is for -- this is just for doing work on the run. Different tools for different jobs and all that...

One of my friends will go on a photo safrai next year, and he was thinking about getting some small light laptop like device to copy pictures to and pre-sort them. Eventually play some games on the go or use WiFi to upload stuff when available. He is not looking for a full blown laptop as it would be too big and heavy to carry around all the time and he doesn't need one. ... you know, if you could juce up an Eee with a 100€ PCMCIA hard drive, it would do him nicely. ___________________________________________________________ "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." The Ars Technica review says that, like most laptops, the screen suffers in direct sunlight.
An iPod or other MP3 player works fine as an external hard drive. You should be able to find 80Gb of last generation iPod for a lot less than 100 euros (and you can get a camera connector for those that sucks the pictures out of most models of camera). |

Why do people not consider putting a spinning hard drive into this device as also being mobility impacting? The thing seems most suited towards accessing the internet when out and about and maybe doing some word processing, storing contact info, etc. So what is the great need for mass storage? *************************************************** * MEB_Registered: 20122002 |

Hey! Don't dis the dong-gourds! I'm kind of tempted to get one of these for my wife. If they had a Japanese version... |

Exactly. I only see it as a vacation e-mail thing & restaurant-finder. If I ever have to open an Excel document or run Photoshop 6 between Martinis in Manhattan, I'll fucking have to go find a new planet to live on, because I'll have turned my little corner of it into a shimmering pool of trinitite. Oh, yeah, before I forget... Fuck you, Microsoft. |
