Memory is up to 16GB as well. I suddenly have this very rare notion of buying a piece of hardware, I have absolutely no use for. ___________________________________________________________ "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." Alan Kay, 1971. |

Just had an email from a friend in the US.. she asked me if I could reccomend a small, portable laptop she could use at college, so ofcourse I reccomended Asus eee.
She's just emailed to moan about how expensive it was.. because she had to buy two new purses to go with her new pink eee, and then shoes and a new coat to match the purses *laughing* -------------- the future is nigh. with not much sleep |

Mine ended up running a couple/few months late. They are targeting summer, so realistically I am guessing a release will be in September. By which time I would have had mine almost a year and definitely got my money's worth out of it.

My friend was interested in one of the Eee's. Might even of bought one if you could find one in a damn store and go play with it....
He ended up going to Fry's and buying their cheapest laptop which is about $299, full size 15 inch screen and keyboard, 512MB RAM, 40GB hard drive, wifi, DVD reader/CD burner installed, a few USb and firewire ports.... It came with Vista Home installed but he scrapped that and installed Ubuntu Linux on it, seems pretty happy with it so far. He just wanted something capable of wireless internet for sitting in coffee houses and such. *************************************************** * MEB_Registered: 20122002 |

I have a 15" laptop with all of the things listed. But its not nice and light for taking out and about. An eee isn't comparible to a low end 15" laptop..

I agree they aren't in the same exact category but in terms of what you can actually use them for.... I think a regular 15", despite the bulk, would be much better suited to people like my friend and myself, simply because I have pretty large hands and I've seen the Eee in public (at coffee houses no less!) and I cannot imagine typing on that tiny keyboard! For me the whole point is a tiny portable device for surfing the web AND checking emails (which to me also implies responding, hence needing to type).
My friend's main point was he wanted something to move all his internet applications off his old Powerbook which he uses to run his sound rig. Now he can dedicate it to only audio tasks because the new laptop handles IMing, web browsing and emails and can be easily transported without unplugging it from a bunch of gear.... I am still interested in the Eee for myself because I would like something to surf the web with that is very lightweight and portable. That makes the 9" screen a much more likely purchase for me. I don't plan to type papers up on the thing so I can live with a small keyboard for simple email replies. (I don't think I would ever want to post something lengthy, say like this post, if I was using the Eee. Then again, I've never had chance to sit and play with one long enough to determine just how horrid the keys would be for my hand size...) I'd also like to use it for examining photos off a digital SLR out in "the field" and maybe doing some audio recording. The portable recorder aspect of the device kinda depends on what gear is compatible with it. I haven't really seen much data on how feasible such an endeavor would be. I also like the hacks for the Eee. RAM upgrade, possible USB drive storage solution for more space, touchscreen hack and running OSX on it are very tempting.... It'll be interesting to see how much the new devices cost, and if they will drive the price down any on the older spec models.... *************************************************** * MEB_Registered: 20122002 |

I have a 15" computer. It sits on my desk and never moves. I hate carrying it around. This is why I got an eee. It's no bigger/heavier than carrying around a paperback. My back thanks me. I do type papers on it (that's what I got it for) in TeX on the Tube, something I'd never do with the macbook. Don't fear the small keyboard...embrace it.
The next models are going to be about 100 quid more -- or $600 kongbucks. (Seems a bit much to me...again: happy with what I have.) Honestly, does no one read press releases?? Here's a summary: http://www.eeeuser.com/2008/03/04/next-generation-asus-eee-pc-900/ Krads: next time we meet, remind me to bring the eee so you can play. |

Asus CEO has big plans for little Eee. HDD, Intel Atom processor, WiMax and 3G, plus a free beach-bunny with every tenth sale.

Had a nice Skype-with-video call with my brother, via my Eee. Nice being able to walk the thing around and give a "tour".

Ah, but do you have a real HD? 'Cause if not, you're at risk of being stopped by airport security for not having a recognizable enough laptop. |

Next Gen Eees to have touchscreen upgrade?
At this rate I'll be constantly waiting for the next model Eee. |

Even if that would be a cool feature, it is nothing I would wait for. The 9" screen, 1GB Ram and 16GB HD however... ___________________________________________________________ "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." Alan Kay, 1971. |

i guess i can see the appeal of touch screen. but given my projected use would be for writing while i'm out and about, then its not the killer app. but like newro says, 9"1GB-Ram16GBHD, i'm sold on that. well, depending on the bottom line. already seeing, the still elusive, existing versions going back up in price recently.

Could that be because of the record low of the Pound? But the high demand is a problem. Available models very from region to region. ___________________________________________________________ "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." Alan Kay, 1971. |

certainly the pound fluctuations might have something to do with it. but that added to the demand just makes it more frustrating. though of course, since i'm waiting for the 9" it doesn't matter.... honest.
