Seattle= #6

In your face, Tucson.

Tucson has a face?

I was under the distinct impression that it was all armpits and assholes.

Oi! I've just learned you slug-encrusted Seattle-ites have been dissing Tucson while I wasn't looking! Mad

But anyways, I also learned that open source still loses to iTunes/iPod for usability. I reformatted my pod with Rockbox and tossed all my music into Songbird this weekend, but have already backed out again. The issues?

- Neither Songbird nor Rockbox allow shuffle by album.
- Songbird doesn't really have the degree of Apple friendliness I've gotten used to, such as automatic lookup of CD covers (without embedding them in the mp3), easy access to control keys to change tracks etc, or Applescript-ability.

Rockbox is pretty cool, but also lacks a bit in a well-integrated 'pod environment.
- It occasionally wouldn't output audio until I tinkered for a minute or two.
- It has no way to deal with smart playlists or any of the songs or other playlists you might have installed via iTunes.
- The iPod has to be formatted by a Windows version of iTunes to install Rockbox.
- My in-car iPod controls were useless. Audio from the 'pod was still recognized, but the radio just displays an error message and all music control must be done at the 'pod.

All in all, a lot more refined then last time I took a look, but still far from the user-friendly experience that the all-Apple system provides.

I'll try again next year though!

You missed it because you were stuck waiting to cross the street in your all-but-unwalkable city while we skipped right across, stepped over a junkie, and plopped down at a library internet terminal next to a homeless guy downloading bestiality porn.

You WISH you were like us!

You do realize that using anything else than an iPod would solve all your problems, right?

I went to my second guitar class and it was hard... well, frustratingly slwo and difficult. Who decided the thickest string (E), at the top of the fretboard as you look down, is deemed the bottom string? My brain turned inside out trying to read tab before I was informed of this fact. Twannnng. Slow.

It's just a thing you need to get used to. Once it clicks in your head, it'll make perfect sense and you will think of it in no other way.

Because it sounds the lowest. And that's what the guitar's about.

Well, actually I didn't have any problems per se with the iPod as presented by Apple. However, as a big proponent of open source, I am always curious to see how close they are to competing with Apple's GUI dudes.

Except for a couple weird lockups, I was by-and-large critiquing aspects of the software GUI, so I don't think it would have mattered if I was running it on any of the myriad other players Rockbox runs on. They're attempting to replace the software in a lot of different players, not just the iPod, and not doing too badly--just not so well there are overwhelming advantages to not sticking with the current iPod software.

Minx better sit down before reading on.

The guy who sits behind me is Thom Yorke's step-father-in-law.

The gunfire around us makes it hard to hear. But the human voice is different from other sounds. It can be heard over noises that bury everything else. Even when it's not shouting. Even when it's just a whisper. Even the lowest whisper can be heard - -over armies... when it's telling the truth.

At work?

Rachel's step-dad? That's cool, I guess. Smile

Several people I know have met Thom and various other members of the band on various and sundry occasions, but it's a bit different than opening Christmas pressies with little Noah and such, innit Big Grin

My reaction was, "wow, you can be married to Thom Yorkes mother in law, and you still need to work. Thats kinda depressing"

The guitar is the most easily played instrument ever devised, that is at the same time fully illogical and impossible to learn.

I personally love the guitar most, amongst all the things I hate with a murderous passion.

I have twenty-two guitars now. I cherish each and every one. I dream of smashing them and burning the pieces.

You are mad, sir. How can you compare the bone-simple logic of the fretboard to the labyrinthine, Quantum physical conundrum of the doodly-doodly woodwinds?

Bigger string, lower tone. Up the board, higher tone. Caveman music.
