"We ended up eating almost-rotten beans fairly often, so natto is a bit like a comfort food."

Gahhh! [urk!]

Just tell me people don't eat steamed tempeh. Ugh. [shudders]

Tempeh's great deep fried in peanut oil, tastes like bacon. In fact, fried tempeh, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches are almost indistinguishable from BLTs.

Yes, disturbing. We like to think it made us resistant to food poisoning.
I don't think I've ever had tempeh; I must try it. My younger siblings are very partial to TVP; it was the other household protein, besides gut-fortifying bean challenges.

I think this would be a good time for a moment of silence in the memory of all the brave men and women who gave their lives to find out which pieces of rotten or nearly rotten food were deadly and which were tasty treats (or at least only gave you extremely painful cramps).

Imagine, if you will, the painstaking research...

"Ok, Hayashida, that raw sea-urchin sex organ stuff actually is pretty tasty. Now try these soybeans I've left sitting in the dark closet in a cloth bag for two months." Snicker snicker

You can say that again man. The next game though I don't see how we can win. But at least we'd be losing from the best team in this tournament. The Czechs are amazingly good.

The Greeks played great defence against a French side with quality all over the pitch. The only reason they were able to do that is because they were good enough. Sure, you need some luck, but you mostly create your own.

Before the Denmark game the Czech's had come from behind to win each of their group games and no team can keep that up for a whole tournament. Perhaps the Denmark game has shown that they have overcome that problem, but there are some definate cracks there.

If the Greek team can frustrate the Czechs and hit them on the counter I think they have a good chance.

And the best team doesn't always win. That's why we watch sport. Big Grin

Given that I'm in Holland, and have lots of Dutch friends, and there's no Aussie team in Euro 2004 (duh!), I'm cheering for Holland. Missed the match a couple of days ago, because I was sleeping on a train at the time, but was delighted to see them win. Saw part of the game last night, with a chagrined Dane... Not that I thought it likely, but I'd love to have seen the Danes bundle the Czechs out, becos they look like the real threat...

Bravus (pretending he knows anything about football)

Oh, and yay Greece!

In my opinion one of the many things that Japanese and Chinese cooking do right is to not attempt to make tofu a 'meat substitute.' Tofu is a pretty good ingredient as long as you don't try to pretend it's meat.

No offense to tofu burger eaters. Razz

Not to mention the milk experiments: "No really, that thickened and smelly batch is pretty good. That green and crumbly stuff is even better."

I fully agree. Veggie burgers and soy milk and all
that stuff is pretty damn good, but it doesn't
taste like what it's supposed to be replacing.
